I enjoy reading the various views on the mobi domain name extension.

There tends to be three distinct camps...

EXTREME OPTIMISM:
The extreme optimisim is often guided by those who would stand to gain tremendously by the success of the extension. Some of those with extreme optimism also tend to be quick to purchase sub-par .mobi domain names; Some have remarkable early-landrush portfolios.

EXTREME PESSIMISM:
The extreme pessimism is often driven by those who dismissed the extension early, invested little, and take the risk of missing the boat for the second time around. Some of those with extreme pessimism are already bitter that they aren't turning a quick buck on landrush purchases - and this fuels their fire.

MODERATE OPTIMISM:
Ironically, I find those who have invested the most in .mobi tend to have the most moderate views on the extension. We realize that mobile is coming in a big way and that .mobi could play a role as a very nice alternative extension to .com in the mobile web.

I fall toward the moderately optimistic side. I paid 6 figures on .mobi domain names. I've broken even with 95% of my inventory in tact... one of the best ROI in 6 months I've ever experienced. I'm going to hold tight for 5-7 years to watch the market materialize. If it materializes, even to an alterative extension status, this will be a multi-million dollar return.

WHAT WE CAN ALL AGREE ON:
There will be drastic changes in the way we currently use our mobile phone. Future generations of mobile will make current hardware look like transitional technology. Development, awareness and use of mobile applications and content are just around the corner. Use opportunities that none of us can currently foresee will launch billion dollar companies.

Will .mobi play a role as an alternative to .com? I believe that it will be a strong alternative extension. Give it 5-7 years...

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

What do you say about .de and .co.uk? They were introduced after the com/net/org triad and have gained wide acceptance and enjoyed nice price appreciation in their niche markets.

According to wikipedia .uk started in 1985 and .de in 1986. These extension grew up with the growth of the internet like pretty much all popular country code extensions.

Your post is very long, sorry I didn't get through all of it.

Timing Is Everything

Hard to believe that this could take five years, with all that has been mentioned in this thread and what seems like a constant flow of news:

...yesterday's Wall Street Journal - special pull out section called "What's New In Wireless" which included an article "What's a Cellphone For? Businesses find new uses for mobile devices"

...today's New York Times - article "Yahoo to Offer A Network for Web Ads on Cellphones".....mentioned earlier in this thread by name idol, but what I found interesting in this article is that "Third Screen Media is in conversations to be acquired by...AOL". Right now Third Screen is the 'other guy' that is offering advertising to cell phone web site publishers...in addition to Admob. From what I see, Third Screen has the Fortune 500 advertisers and Admob doesnt seem to. The problem with Third Screen, from my dialogue with them, is they wanted me to put up money to join their ad program as a publisher... fat chance. But you can be sure that if AOL buys the company, they will not be 'charging' us publishers, and we should have a nice situation with Yahoo and AOL ....and soon Google...competing for our business to include their ads on our mobi sites.

...today's Wall Street Journal - article "ZenZui and the Art of Mobile Web Surfing" with subtitle "Building Better Browser For Cellphone Users Drives Start-Up, Rivals". The article mentions that more then ten million U.S. mobile phone users accessed Web search from a mobile browser in January.

I agree with the idea of developing relatively simple sites. If you check out www.CountyWebsite.mobi and www.VisitParks.mobi you will find almost one hundred small developed mobi sites. The nice thing about publishing a web site....compared to a brochure, for instance....is you can add more content to it anytime, if you wish.

obviously optimistic

Is there a camp yet for yo-yos?

Sometimes this looks like a sure winner.

Other times I notice how there still are only four RFP names (unplaced and overdue??? What's the deal there?). How Pinky is not returning to Namepros or answering the posted questions. How easily a bureaucracy could get behind in updating .Mobi requirements and the extension quickly wither - at any time in the future. (A rarely discussed elephant?)

Guess I'll be in whichever camp has the best music at the moment.
