First ever non selective .AU aftermarket auction is underway and ends tomorrow:

http://www.netfleet.com.au/index.php?a=auctions

These will be running weekly with a max of 50 domains each week. Hopefully this will provide some much needed liquidity into the .AU market.

What do you guys think? You think there will be enought demand to make these a success week in, week out?

International target markets

What's the general consensus with ccTLD's and international markets? I'm thinking of opening up a new site for reviews/affiliate marketing, and I want to target the US (largest english speaking market).

The problem is I can't find a gTLD domain anywhere near my niche that I would be happy with. I do however own a keyword .co and a keyword .com.au

I feel the .com.au would be great, but I'm worried it won't index well nor appeal well to a US market. Right now I'm tossing up between the .co and a .com.au, with the main reason I haven't already gone with .co being I was worried people may see it as a typo/enter the wrong domain

Although I'm a big fan of .au, I have to admit that domain would struggle to rank in the US so if you really want to target that market you'd be better with a gTLD (or a .us maybe?)

However targeting a market just because it's the biggest isn't necessarily the best reason.

It's all about competition. There may be a market 1/2 the size with 1/10th the competition.

Remember, page 1 on Google for a local search with a minor ccTLD will usually trump page 5 for a US search on a .com domain.

.co before .com.au for the american market would be the way i would go

Big domain at auction at the moment.

Hobart.com.au (capital of Tasmania) is currently at a high bid of $12,500 and auction ends on Tusday at 2pm.

This is probably the best domain that has ever gone to auction in .AU since sales restrictions were lifted in 2008 so the result will say a lot about the market at the super-premium end

I agree. And I'm in Australia.

I would go further and say .co before .com.au for the GLOBAL market. I use .com.au's if I'm marketing directly to Australians.

...Wondering if anyone here has been asked to provide info to the auDA regarding any of their .com.au's. I have under 100 but am constantly worrying about "losing them"

you are allowed to park them , or make simple one page blogs

go the pies ! :]

I have many times. Less so these days though.

It's actually 'safer' to park them than do nothing with them. Monetisation is a legit resaon to hold the domain in auDA's eyes.

If they are unresolved you may get challenged (usually due to someone else making a complaint because they want them for themselves) but you do have time to state your intentions and as long as your intentions include appropriate use then you will be OK.

EG you have shoes.com.au.

You have shoe ads all over it, you will not be questioned

You have nothing on it, you may have a eligibility request. However if you just respond saying you plan to develop a site about shoes you'll be OK too.

Two bits of .AU news today:

1) Poker.com.au just sold for $100K. Not bad considering online gambling banned in Australia

2) Electricity.com.au dropping tomorrow. Could be a big one!

I bet it could have gone even higher.

To compare poker.ca sold for $400K a few months back. It has 50% higher population and total GDP and whilst online poker rooms are not allowed in Canada, you are allowed to advertise overseas poker rooms. You can't do either in Australia.

Also expired domain Electricity.com.au just sold for $34K including GST on the drops today...

Any one an Expert with .com.au domains?

Hi all,

I have been into domains for around 6 years, mostly .com/.info/.net ect ect Ive sold over 100 over the years... today I saw something interesting online in regards to .com.au domains and it got me thinking why cant I buy a few? As to date I own ZERO .com.au's and I am from Australia.

I am a bit confused to the rules can you buy like 10 domains on the same ABN number or do you need different ABNs for different domains?

I notice companies like OMG | Online Marketing Group have like 100s of premium .com.au domains via 1 ABN, I also ready about how this company started lol..

I am looking at developing and SEOing these .com.au's..not just sitting on them...

To start I want to buy like 5, and test the water..

Any advice for me? Any one have some powerful insights into .com.au domains?

thanks
the abn is needed for the eligibility , but you only need the one not one per name.
