I can picture teenagers and fun loving people all over the world using .mobi sites as a quick , cheap and easy way to get up a vanity site for themselves...

great post, i think it IS the ultimate vanity domain plus i think we will see a lot of what i call "business card mobi's" which will be quick and easy to put up using the increasing number of mobi templates

i think we will see a fair number of people, especially professionals who don't really _want_ to put up and maintain a website but who think they have to have one and decide that a mobi is quick to do by themselves and cheap and easy to maintain and can easily cover all the basics about what you do and your contact details and picture etc (i see that businesscard.mobi and callingcard.mobi are gone)

This is an excellent topic, that ties in very well with the bigger picture which is the personalization of the great web... your mobile device goes with you everywhere, and stays with you all the time, and you will connect to the whole world through it, and visaversa.

Considering the digitization of our world, I forsee doing a tremendous multitude of things with that one mobile device in the future - that future is already here, but a day will come when we won't need a wallet, or keys, or bus pass, or student id, or tickets - it will all be done with our little mobile device - the device will become an extension of ourselves, and it makes perfect sense to attach a label to that device that identifies us to the world.

Here there seems to be some overlap with the purpose of .tel, but .mobi is much more powerful, IMO.

Owning any domain that represents a certain amount of traffic is vanity I suspect. I know that my ownership of some top keyword .mobi domains make me feel special.

And you are correct on the vanity issue...when dot com started gaining popularity (talk about showing age) everyone viewed it as a vanity issue just as "vanity" personalized license plates.

absolutely this is what we hope for, i think that if mobi is to really explode it will pretty much need to be the case that the mobile is like a personal swiss army knife: it will have gps for directions and mapping, a barcode reader for scanning and comparison shopping, it will receive coupons and tickets digitally, it will contain digital id etc

and instead of downloading and installing programs like the palm it will simply connect to a network of servers which will hold all the data for the end user .... and hopefully that data will be accessed thru mobi sites ... i absolutely think this is the direction we are heading ... how much of it happens thru mobi domains is yet to be seen buy that's why mobi was created, to move all this along

mobi may fail, it may become an also ran or just another option among many but i think it has a decent shot of becoming very very big
