Okay, we are going to join the Skype generation.

To keep in touch with the grandkids.

Tell me, what do I need for my computer for Skype?
Yes, I can easily download the software.
What microphone, headsets, camera, etc. do I need?
What do you recommend?

Any speaker/microphone. Any camera/webcam. A decent connection.

A modern pc has all that in built - you don't need anything else
A modern phone has all that built in - you don't need anything else
A tablet has all that built in - ditto

You don't really need 'special' hardware.

If your PC is old?

Just buy a headset by Plantronics and any old webcam really.

NOTE: If you buy an iPad they'll think of you as being cooler.

i just thanked DU's post because he basically covered /answered your request BUT! i have to disagree with his ipad comment...

if you want to ride the tablet wave, you can get the functions way more affordable

kindle fire is a good device, played with it a bit but it lacks just a bit on my side of things....but for that money, who can complain(other then the late steve) lol

Okay, got it all going now.
Once stuff arrives from amazon, will be on skype.

Kindle Fire is great!
Everyone we know has one or getting one.
Some even dropped their ipads for one.
Since my wife's phone has wifi, she uses her kindle fire in the van when we go places.
Today her and her sister were on and having fun.
While I drove!
Hahahahahaha...

Fire wouldn't work for Skype though - no camera. (No microphone either, but there are workarounds for that . )

Just going to set up skype for the family.
Got son and his family moving to Denver this month.
Another son and his family in Texas.
Plus sisters, nieces, nephews, blah blah blah all over the country.

This evening son going to denver is coming in with his brood for the weekend.
Bringing his laptops for me to clean out, speed them up, and see what ram can be added and what kind.
