Sound recorder software?

I just found a microphone and hooked it up to my computer, so I'm wondering if there's any software any of you recommend to record the sound and possibly burn it to CD?

Ideally, it would be free. I've tried the sound recorder that came with my system, but it doesn't really do what I want it to do.
