3SKYPE.mobi
(BIG thanks to Dagersh for the intel)

Here is the text:

3Skype.mobi
Skype users everywhere will be very happy that the free phoning system is now available on a new phone – and those who are new to it will wonder why they haven't been using it for years already...

WHO WOULD USE IT?

Anyone who buys the new 3 Skypephone, whether they are an old hand at calling people via their PC or they are new to it. Anyone who wants free Skype to Skype calls when out and about.

WALK THROUGH

The first screen, once you log on, offers you a choice of the languages the phone is available (it will eventually be available in English, Italian German, Mandarin, Swedish and Danish) in and once you’re past that you’re into a clean page with all the guidance you need to use the phone.

The first section covers all the basics you need to know about the 3 Skypephone.

If you don't already know you'll find out what Skype is and how the new phone works. There's a step-by-step guide, complete with screengrabs, to creating a Skype account and adding Skype contacts to your phone. For those of you with Skype accounts already there is a guide to logging in the mobile phone way.

Obviously there is also a guide on how to call and send Instant Messages to other Skype users as well as calling those who’ve not discovered it yet – it’s made clear how you make free calls, which calls you will have to pay for and how the system works in tandem with Skype on your PC, if you have it.

The 3Skypephone includes internet access on the handset and the site goes through the various features on the phone which lead you on to the mobile web.

Plus, no phone is complete now without camera and music-playing capabilities and there is a “how to” guide to taking and storing photos and downloading and playing your favourite tunes.

Below this section is a link to frequently asked questions, which is a pretty comprehensive section covering everything that you may need answering. For those of you with little time (or patience) to spare to figure things out there's also a handy fast guide with indicators which make all the phone’s screen icons, as well as the key pad buttons’ functions, clear. The guide also links to the sites where you can find out where and how to buy one although you have to go the pc website to buy the new phone.

For those that are unaware of Skype or THREE.

Here is a snippet:
As of September 30, 2007, Skype had a cumulative number of unique user accounts of 246 million. Users may register more than once, and as a result, may have more than one account.

Skype (IPA: [skaɪp], rhymes with type) is a software program created by the entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Skype allows users to make telephone calls from their computer to other Skype users free of charge, or to landlines and cell phones for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer, short message service, video conferencing and its ability to circumvent firewalls.

The Skype Group, acquired by eBay in September 2005, has headquarters in Luxembourg, with offices in London, Tallinn, Tartu, Prague [1] and San Jose, California. Skype experienced rapid growth in both popular usage and software development since the launch, both of its free and its paid services.

3 (THREE) is a brand used for nine mobile telecommunications networks in Europe, Asia and Australia. Hutchison Whampoa holds a direct or indirect, majority or minority interest in all of them.

All 3-branded networks emphasize their offering of "mobile multimedia" and provide 3G technology (WCDMA, some also run 2G networks). 3 is present in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Hutchison Whampoa also holds a 3G-license in Norway. As of 22nd August 2007, registered THREE customers worldwide numbered almost 15.9 million.

THREE aggressively markets new handsets and services and launches new products regularly, lately focusing on Mobile TV related services. As with other 3G networks around the world, 3 allows video calling and fast internet access from most of its handsets.

Fantastic news.
...

Agreed, nothing but great news.

Anyone want to debate this:?

Hint: It might be best not to try the 'defensive registration' argument on this occasion.

Not only is 3skype.mobi fully functional, but the .com is parked.
:hehe:

Yes Frank,

Skype also advertises and promotes their dotMobi throughout their corporate SKYPE PC site....

Dagersh repped, but the system won't allow me to rep BocaVision again. Could anyone else do that for me please?
:great:

...And interestingly, Three, has their own unique dotMobi site 3Next.mobi

What's wrong with these billions-invested-in-mobile types, don't they know .com will always be the alpha and omega of the internet in all its forms?

Yes, you guessed it - 3Next.com is parked
:hehe:

Wow, I couldn't believe a mobile phone company would work with Skype, knowing that Skype users would erode 3's revenue stream because customers will use their unlimite data plan to make IP calls which are very very cheap or even free.

Ultimately the mobile phone companies will become the current telephone companies if this model continues.

Spot on, hedgefund! They wouldn't, if it weren't for the likely competition - both from other carriers and other modes of access (both of which could easily attract those customers for whom cheap/free IP calls are important via mobile Skype services anyway).

So if they can't beat them ('them' being Skype) they might just as well join them.

I don't know if anyone has seen/commented on this story about BT trying to turn the whole of Britain into a big WiFi hotspot fro mobile phones (which is just one example of the 'other modes of access' referenced above):

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/84277bb2-72cb-11dc-b7ff-0000779fd2ac.html

IMHO this suggests that THREE/Hutchinson are simply more enlightened :] than other mobile carriers - they've seen the future of voice services, and in monetary terms it ain't orange (UK-centric mobile advertisement humor, meaning it's not good). If you take your analogy to its logical conclusion and consider that mobile is naturally more competitive than the fixed-line telecom industry, you may well say it's slightly scary for carriers.
:ghost:

I've made a related case a few days ago, so I won't digress into those :$:22bn arguments here:

http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/389696-south-africa-sees-future-in-3g.html#post2290843

To my mind it looks like what they're saying about the future - and how to deal with it - could be simplified along these lines:

"Forget voice, we need to get the masses using the internet on their phones - now":!:

Is it just a coincidence then that THREE/Hutchinson also happen to be leading the way in using .mobi:?

Congratulations Gary!

If you've managed to combine the 4am feeding with a Digg for the story, there is really no excuse for the rest of us!

The gentleman from California's call to action presumably uses vocabulary that is targeted at the Digg demographic, but like it or not they also happen to be the key demographic that needs to start 'digging' .mobi
