I just sent this email to the dot mobi development issues people over at mtld.mobi

Dear Developers:

You need to have the manufacturers of the handheld devices add a physical or touch screen button, that when pressed, completes the Internet address by automatically adding the .mobi extension to the typed-in web address.

Having such a button will do several things:

1) Make .mobi web sites easy and convenient to access;
2) Advertise the .mobi every time a handheld user looks at his or her PDA;
3) Validates the .mobi as an integral and necessary part of the mobile web experience; and,
4) Makes the .mobi special.

I hope to see the addition of such a button. Adding it will help you win over the public's confidence about the .mobi.

Best regards,

Robert Shanklin

The developers have nothing at all to do with this. Contact the makers of the products themselves.

I'm all for .mobi, but I don't want to force any extension on mobile devices. What if someone doesn't want the .mobi site and already knows the address they want (be it .com, .net, etc...)? Forcing the .mobi extension would get highly annoying.

Button issue

The user would always be free to manually type in the .com instead of pressing the .mobi button.

In all honesty I find this to be unrealistic and borderline silly. Considering the sea of parked pages currently, this would be a sure fire way to kill the .mobi experience for the public. Many users would think .mobi was owned by Sedo.

If you want to win people over to .mobi, develop relevant sites and earn the respect of users. You won't get there with browser defaults or .mobi buttons. As MANY have said here before, develop, develop, develop if you want it to succeed. Lobbying mTLD or Nokia for auto traffic ain't gonna happen.

better to just as that it is "hot key" In other word, continued pressing of say the "9" would automatically bring up ".com" ".mobi" ".yourmomwashere" ".whatever".

I think that eventually domain traffic will cause the mobile phone players to re-think their approach to mobile development regarding keys, screens and the like, ie development is key here ATM like Scandiman points out. Maybe have 2 keys .mobi and .com then again.... B-)

I guarantee if mobi domain owners knew there was a mobi button...there would be a flood of development...

Well said. Either people are going to think .mobis are owned by Sedo or they'll think .mobis don't have actual sites, but are just one page advertisements. If .mobi is going to get anywhere development is the key. Who wants to browse a mobile web full of ad pages and no content?

Shouldn't that be going on already? ;)

If there was I would find $5k real fast to buy the best damn names I could. Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be happening.

Agreed, and I have presented the questions / clarifications of the ".MOBI button", the "Browser Default", and as well as the specifics and capacities of the "Investors Commitments", etc. to Pinky and mTLD here publicly ... to which I'm hoping to see some insight in the very near future, IMHO. :music:

i will admit that i have something of an obssesion with the issue of browser defaults

i see as a necessity and not implementing it would be a letdown of the mobi tld and it's supporters

nokia, erricson, samsung, microsoft etc definitely have the power to make this happen

google gives you the option to choose but that only confuses the user, dot com has the advantage on large screens, let mobi have it on the small screen

It obsesses me, as well ... and I agree that the browser default is CRITICAL to the life of the .MOBI extension, IMHO. :yell:
Hopefully we'll get some much needed information on this aspect shortly, Nombre ... :gl:

See you soon.
