Hello,

I try to find out what is the simplest way to use .tel domain with Iphone, in order to phone call someone.

So far, i did as following:
- Add the .tel domain as "website" to a contact.
- When i want to phone call this contact:
1) I go to contact,
2) I select the right contact
3) I clic on the .tel domain website
4) Iphone open a browser with contact information (slow)
5) i clic on the phone number
6) iphone call the phone number.

This is too long...
What i want to do is:
1) I go to contact
2) I select the right contact
3) I clic on the .tel domain website
6) iphone call the phone number.

So i want to skip the browser part...

Any idea how to do so ?

I want iphone to get .tel associated phone number without me to open a browser...

Regards

Currently dot tel is not working on iphone because of the webproxy, we don't know when they will fix that.
Your post might be moved to dot tel official discussion.

There are free applications that have been created for the iPhone that enable you to lookup others .tel domains and also manage your own entirely. Currently they're being submitted to the AppStore. You can however download the compiled free apps from http://dev.telnic.org, which enable you to do direct-to-DNS lookups without having to open the browser.

Thanks,

Cool, i am happy to hear that.

I hope Iphone will able contact synchronization with .tel soon.
I hope i will be able to DIRECTLY call anyone.tel soon, without plugin or visible third party lookup.

Hakita,
if you have a jailbroken iphone, you can already download an app that kind of does what you want, if you add the Cydia repository http://dev.telnic.org/iphone/ and download the app "LocateThem".

LocateThem goes through your addressbook and finds anyone with a .tel website, and then you can see how close to you they are, click to call them, etc...
The app was a proof of concept months ago, and I need to update it. It doesn't have privacy, and the map stuff is really ugly, but I'll definitely update it as soon as I can.

BTW, navigating natively .tel domains on the iPhone is incredibly fast. You won't ever want to go back to the web. :)

FYI here's also another app in the repository that lets you look up the public info of any .tel domain.

If the person is already in your contact list on the iphone then why go to their .tel to call them when you can just press your finger from the contact screen to call them right there. If you need a yellowpages to call other people there are tons of yellow pages apps on the iphone that dont require you to open your browser at all. If .tel doesnt work on the iphone then that is a huge problem considering 70% of all mobile web use comes from the iphone/ipod touch. the iphone IMO pretty much eliminates the need for .tel. I can easily have all my contacts listed right there and i can easily get on facebook or twitter or use google maps or yellowpages apps. Why type in random .tel names when you dont even know who owns it? What if i want a hotel room and go to hotels.tel, the domain could be owned by anyone and they could just put fake information on there, its not reliable compared to opening a yellow pages app. .tel might have been a cool product like 6 years ago before iphones and android phones where you already have access to everything you need at your fingertips. With a yellow pages app you dont have to remember hundreds of .tel domains or even one domain, you just open the one app.

Excellent points!

On a side note, why does Telnic always try to explain away these issues like they're no big deal. The fact that .TEL is not working via the iPhone's web browser would appear to be a huge problem. Explaining how to download a work-around or custom application does not solve the underlying problem. _\|/_
