Interesting news I just came across... Apparently DIGG has (unofficially??) launched a mobile version made just for the iPhone.

you've got to either be on an iPhone, in Webkit, or possibly on a Webkit-enabled device like some of the fancy Nokia phones.

link to mobile DIGG: http://digg.com/iphone

is the iphone's browser on the verge of defining the way we surf the web on mobiles? what does this mean for .mobis in general?

:cy:

Will this open source web browser engine - WebKit - set the standard? Hard to say, but if other phone companies copy Apple, it could.

.mobi can be accessed from any phone with internet with any browser and can also be accessed from nintendo ds and UMPCs. if a company wants to make a mobile site that is only accessible to a small percentage of phones that wouldnt be very smart. iphone doesnt even make up 1% of the worldwide cellphone market. Even if they were to sell as many iPhones as iPods (which they wont) it still wouldnt even make up close to 10% of the phone market. they could also easily also make a normal digg mobile site for very little money for anyone with any phone to use. Not making mobiles sites accessible to everyone is also bad for .com. This just increases the need for .mobi since it would be even more confusing as to how to access mobile sites from different companies. Some would be m.whatever.com, some would be mobile.whatever.com, some would only work on iPhone, some would only work on Nokia, some would be whatever.com/wap, etc. I have used an iPhone a lot and using the web on iPhone is also a huge pain since you have to zoom and scroll since you will never be able to fit an entire website on that small a screen. people might want limited important information for fast access while on the go.

There's also
http://diggriver.com/

I was a little worried about this, since my bMarks.mobi would be no match for a mobile digg, except I realized that I still have the advantage of only linking to mobile sites, so until digg realizes this little mistake on their part, hopefully I'll have enough time to get a userbase.

These are just websites making their applications for an iphone just like companies are making widgets and facebook applications. A website that has a facebook application like HotorNot is still going to be running their normal hotornot.com website right? Or do you think they would only allow themselves to be accessible through facebook and kill all their traffic? Companies also make applications for Treos and other devices too. Twitter of course also has a regular mobile website too. It is m.twitter.com right now. Obviously companies and websites arent stupid enough to only make their sites accessible by an iPhone unless they want to seriously limit their mobile traffic.

i think the smart companies and sites will run their names in everyway possible. say m.xx; mobile.xx; xxxx.mobi; whatever they may be. the question becomes how they advertise, will it be one way? and how they redirect. but hopefully there will be core group of people that come to like the .mobi experience and if they are looking for something, may try xxxx.mobi.
