Happened two hours ago, and he's in "serious but stable" condition. He's currently undergoing surgery.

Ben had a green light and was crossing an intersection when a car struck him, sending him flying over the handlebars to hit his head "with great force" on the windshield of the car. He wasn't wearing a helmet (a recent law made helmets optional), and has head injuries.

As a huge 10-year Steelers fan, I am really pissed off about this, but what I'm really worried about is that he's ok :'(

And please, no "he deserved it for not wearing a helmet" comments, this means a lot to me, and I'm really nervous about this right now.

EDIT: Apparently Roethlisberger broke his jaw, fractured facial bones, lost some teeth, and suffered lacerations to the front and back of his head. Also I heard on TV that he may have damaged his knees (obviously a bad sign for a football player), but haven't seen anything online to back that up.

I hope he's alright. Damn, he did so good in the SuperBowl. God bless him.

Yeah, I know - he's an amazing quarterback. It was so fun to watch him lead my team to the Super Bowl last year, and all the fans LOVE him - not only for ability as a quarterback, but as an amazingly nice and generous person.

It's a shame there's such terrible drivers out there. Don't they know they are risking other peoples lives? Poor innocent little Ben..

Yeah that sucks. Although I hate him as a player (too good :p), I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Apparently he was alert and talking to doctors before the surgery, so that's a good sign.

It's all over the TV around here, so I'm going to go check that.

Ok. I know you said not to mention the helmet thing, but hopefully when Ben recovers he will use this event to promote helmet use.
I'm not a Pittsburgh fan but I am a big fan of Roethlisberger and if he recovers fully he has the potential to become one of the greatest quarterbacks of our generation.

I hope the driver who ran the red light is held accountable.

This is crazy, probaly won't effect his mobility as a QB still. He will be fine. Just a little out of it for the next few weeks

@HHDomains: Yeah I agree that he should wear a helmet from now on, because he needs to be especially careful since he means so much to so many people.

@Corky: Hopefully, but I just read that Ben has two sprained (?) knees. I guess it all depends on how well those heal, because one thing that makes him such a great player is his mobility.

Current injury list as reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

"Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said."

Not looking good.

It kind of surprises me that there was not a clause in his contract prohibiting him from riding without a helmet.
That used to be standard.

That's good to hear.

Here's a little rant I have that sort of concerns this situation.

I really don't understand a lot of our street laws in this country. In Texas (and I'm sure elsewhere) you have to be over a certain age (16, I think) and in the back seat of a car to legally not wear your seat belt. However, most school buses don't even HAVE seat belts?

Also, in my county, you don't have to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, but you do while riding a bike (even as an adult?).

Sigh.

Glad to hear that he is better after surgery. I hope the steelers can go far again this year. *knock on wood*

Definitely. That's what I thought first too. I don't care who you are and what you think, this guy is a bonehead for not wearing a helmet. Otherwise, I hope he is ok.

Great news, he should be released from the hospital within 3-5 days! Apparently everything will heal fine, and he doesn't have any brain damage! Also, his knees are apparently ok.

Now the question is whether or not he was even legally licensed to ride a motorcycle (his license may have expired in March). Either way, the important thing is that he's ok.

And yes, I agree that he was a moron for not wearing a helmet ;)

And a moron if he should not have been on the bike to begin with
