So I'm heading home from a friends house, and I'm heading west on this street Oakton, going to make a right turn north onto this street Elmhurst. I'm about 6-7 cars back in the right lane, when our light turns green, so we start going, but we hear a siren, so we all stop, and this Cook County sherrif comes barreling down Elmhurst from the right. He jumps onto the oncoming lane so he can get through the intersection, but the cars heading towards me on Oakton apparently didnt see him, so the cop t-bones this black SUV doing about 60-70 miles per hour. The black SUV slides and hits this copper colored SUV, and that SUV gets clipped and FLIPS OVER, and is in the air for what seemed like a minute but probably more like 1 second. The car lands literally 30 feet to my right, and I'm sitting there like "I did not just see that," or "that didnt really happen" but then I immediately pull into the gas station I was next to, run over to the flipped SUV and run over and help the guy out through his sunroof - he ended up just having a cut on his elbow. The guy that got t-boned in the SUV was laying down in pain but didn't look like anything serious. The cop ended up going to the hospital but should be out tonight.
The worst part is is that the cops have a bad habit of going way too fast on this road. I can understand getting to an emergency, but this particular intersection is especially busy because the the I-90 highway from Chicago gets off right down the street, and it was about 7:15, so there was a lot of traffic. A few weeks ago I was at dinner on this same road, and we saw a cook county sherrif again doing at least 70, and my dad said "you know, one of these days, those cops are going to kill someone going that fast," well, luckily no one died or was seriously injured, but the guy was already talking about a possible lawsuit, so they all had to take down my information.
Have any of you been in / seen a serious accident? It really is a surreal experience, almost like it really didn't just happen.
