This was brought to my attention. I was wondering your take on it. As it pertains to an adult website, I won't post any real urls here. I'll use fake ones. But my details should be sufficient in the case.

A friend just told me about a porn site--I'll use the fakey domain goodsite.com. As it turns out, there is a non-porn site (it's actually Christian-based) located @ good-site.com. Take a look at the below:

goodsite.com:
Created on: 13-Nov-11
Expires on: 13-Nov-13

good-site.com:
Creation date: 11 Mar 2010 07:55:00
Expiration date: 11 Mar 2013 02:55:00

The hyphenated version was registered and thus likely developed before thew non-hyphenated version. Seems to me that some asshole registered the non-hyphenated version, hoping to seal traffic from the other, and went so far as to try making money off Christians who forget the - and merely type in goodsite.com

Yeah, things like this happen but is it just me who it pisses off? It reminds me of those pricks years ago who used typos of Disney domains for porn, assuming a 9 year old girl wanted to watch a woman take it up the ass. Doesn't this disturb you?

yes it is disturbing but scumbags will do anything to steal typo traffic. Just look at any top site in the web. All the typo versions of their domain will be registered, more often than not by people other than the company.

Steal traffic, yes. But make money from those traffic??

Not unless the Christians would go clicking on their browser attempting to close the site, while covering their eyes. And they accidentally clicked a banner ad.

I think they would like to be a nuisance, so that the Christian website owner would try to buy them out. It's like a form of blackmail.

This is what happened to the .XXX launching, when institutions like the Vatican purchased their own porn TLD to avoid getting blackmailed by domainers who ask huge somes of money to stop the nuisance and hand them the domain.

To be honest, you can't really know. And one shouldn't jump to conclusions just because of the subject matter of the site.

How many people here actually look to see if there is a hyphenated version of a domain before they reg the non-hyphen? Not many I predict.

It could just be an unfortunate coincidence. But ultimately it really depends on the domain.

If for example, the religious site was mytown-church.com, and the porn site was mytownchurch.com, well then I would then say you are probably right.

If it was deliberate, then yes it's a slimy move, but can you really know for certain?

I'm a bit confused...

The non-hyphenated "good" version was the johnny come lately to the party -- by a year and a half!

So the question that now comes to mind is, what was the status of the non-hyphenated version at that earlier point in time? Maybe it was an even bigger adult oriented website and the guys with the hyphenated version were just trying to pick up some of their misguided traffic. (Though this doesn't necessarily make the situation any better if it is was a blatantly christian focused domain.)

I would say that there is more to the story. What does Archive.org show for the "good" site prior to it's registration in 2011?

I don't think any Christian goodguys would select a domain name that can be easily mistaken for something that even hints of porn.

In the same way, i don't think any porn operator would use a domain name that is not sleazy enough to attract the pervs in this planet (that includes me, lol) and make him money. it doesn't really make sense to sell porn to people who are 98% sure will never click on porn (like the Roman Catholic clergy..., err, ok. That's just a hypothetical assumption).

in disney's case, yes it is wrong. But what is it so special to Christian site?

Are you sure that the porn site was not first and the Christians are trying to cure the sinners. It may be more annoying to look for porn and find Jesus staring at you.

I think the issue is simpler than you are making out. All sites that have porn should have proper access controls and not just totally free access. The religious aspect is meaningless.

That was in the 90's.

Nowadays, nobody cares anymore. Porn sites sprout like mushrooms.

Again, to deduce who is annoying who, you have to know what the domain name is. Legit porn have nasty names. Legit christian sites, have benign names.

Who cares? The market will decide. There are too many threads in the main forum about this stuff. Make a one big thread and combine all these rants into one.

If adult ads are doing better then christian related ads (and there are plenty) then so be it.

Then again, never got why whitehouse.com for the longest time was a porn site. talk about appealing to the demographic.

Which makes the Disney guy even more stupid. How stupid can you be to put porn ads on a Disney typo. At the very least put some kid ads.

Stealing Christian traffic for porn. Does this irk you?

hmmm...let me offer an alternative headline for you Randy- and I hope I can be just as sensational as you.

Christians killing gays because God says to. Does this irk you?

Like they did with Harvey Milk.

But to answer your question yes, Christians irk me. Only because they are so f'ing self righteous.

Give us real URLs and we might even have a chance to find out what it going on before we judge it. To me no matter how loud you say you don't want to jump to conclusions, the rest of us are forced to make that jump because of inadequate information. That it is coupled with a self righteous headline about Christians is what adds the sting, to me.

BTW congrats, looks like you're not a muzzled mod anymore. :kickass:

I quit for personal reasons.

Yeah, I've had ppl (read this entire thread) who've said similar. I suppose it's not heavily the porn-site-getting-christian-site-traffic thing that bugs me. It's more of the fact that an entity is using the non-hyphenated version of an established site to get traffic. I can't post the urls here for obvious reasons. But even if this is a common-enough thing, it irks me, the same.
