So I was curious to known the actual extent of speculation in the .mobi TLD.
I thought having a look at which name servers are used would provide some clues.

I parsed today's zone file and looked for domain names parked with known PPC providers.

I used the following sources to compile a source of known parking name servers:
http://www.namepros.com/parking-and...ked-ns-database-creation-post-nameserver.html
http://www.ohashi.info/domain_parking

Remarks:
  • A few mobi names have no name servers set, so they are missing from the zone files
  • It is possible to park a name using managed DNS, so the list is conservative
  • I am pretty sure that many domains are redirected, or not used at all

You can check the report here.

Now I will let you comment the results. I know there will be a lot of ifs and buts :)
Personally I think the number of parked domains is pretty high.
Now don't get me wrong, there is a lot of speculation going on in other extensions, but the other extensions are well-established and not lacking development. Anyway I am not surprised at the results.

Is the glass half empty or half full ? You decide :)

A number of people have more names than they know how to or have time to develop, and parking is an interim step for them. Others are holding out for the extension to grow in value. Some people are actually getting parking revenue. It's kind of like the wild west out there now... and also difficult to draw a conclusion about what the motives of the domain name owners are. It would be interesting to hear from people with parked names what their experience and motivations are. For most people, I'm guessing it is a combination of all of the above.

Lack of a clear picture of what kind of sites can be of value in the mobile web. Most of my sites are information that beople would leisurely browse through - Ancient Egypt, unconventional science. Not the fare of most people in motion.

And most of my mobis are LLL, NNNN, and LLLL - not words, so there is no obvious meaning. But my biggest issue is that I cannot get my mind around any good content.

Made for-mobile content is the key to unlocking a vast array of mobile sites, - and, therefore, make the mobile web useful & ubiquitous, imo...

Original content takes years to accumulate, and create (just as it took the PC web 15-20 years to build the sites & content it has now)....Either we (owners & developers) will slowly create & accumulate content for mobile, or big & small business will adapt their own content for the mobile web, or increasingly aggregators will do it....

One way, or another, content will drive the success (or otherwise) of the mobile internet, and .mobi.

Oh well I really wonder how many people have revenue, as I believe the traffic isn't there really. I could see a lot of these parked names being dropped when renewal comes due :guilty:
Actually it reminds me of the old days when PPC did not exist. To make money on domains you had to sell them or develop.

I hope to have a .asia analysis available soon ;)

Oh well I really wonder how many people have revenue,

some of my mobi names are generating far more revenue than comm/net/org, etc. i would think you need to compare the quality first

I could see a lot of these parked names being dropped when renewal comes due

absolutely. there were some crappy names registered, including some of mine ;) if you are able, it would be more interesting to see how many com names are parked and how many are being dropped and compare the same for mobi names. that would be more statistically interesting than a generic statement

Actually it reminds me of the old days when PPC did not exist. To make money on domains you had to sell them or develop.

again, some people are making money with parking; now with parking revenue being down across the board, maybe it would make more sense to create some mini sites and slap on mobile specific ads?
