With this quote from the article below, I think it was a good idea to stop this guy. $750,000 a month is alot to be stealing and not just some innocent activity.
meljr

"Jeremy Jaynes, of Raleigh, N.C., considered among the top 10 spammers in the world at the time of his arrest, used the Internet to peddle pornography and sham products and services, prosecutors said. Thousands of people fell for his scam, grossing Jaynes' operations up to $750,000 per month, investigators said."

Anyone know more details about SPAM operations?

My question: Are they paid-per-view or per-click or something? I'm sure most aren't paid per purchase...it's not like this guy had a garage full of stuff he was FedExing out - he wasn't personaly profiting from the sale of anything - just the advertising. 9 years is total BS.

9 years is a bit much.
They should have taken his money away and given him a more lenient sentence.

He's got 9 years because 9 yrs is just right. People at justice system are not stupid. We were not at the trial. We don't know the whole story.
I hope the inmates will spam his @$$ every day.

yeah, then he can spam even more.

He should have been given 19 years and a $100 million fine.

I definately hate spamming. But 9 years is too much.
but as someone said above, we do not know the entire details of the case.
I am sure it wasnt for just spamming, obviously, there was some phishing included, otherwise he wouldnt be making that much $$$.
So, it seems to be that he spammed, in order to gain by 'selling' or, worst, tricking people into scams.
if that is the case, then 9 years is about right.

People at justice system are not stupid.
OJ...

750k a month is a lot of damage. That guy deserves it. Way to make a bad name for those of us that make a legitimate internet income.

For him to make $750k PER MONTH means he was doing everything under the sun that was illegal. I am sure the list of charges were so vast that 9 years was a light sentence.

In its unanimous ruling, the appeals court wrote that Virginia has a "legitimate public interest" in policing unsolicited e-mail and that the state anti-spamming law's impact on interstate commerce "is incidental and clearly not excessive."

It seesm the appelate court unanimously ruled it a good sentence. Also this guy's profits most likely are still in his pockets..so even after 9 years...he will still be more rich than most of us. A 9 year sentence means he might serve 4-6 years before parole..maybe less even. I am sure he will go to a country club minimum security prison.

I hope they distribute his prison mailing address, maybe I can mail him THOUSANDS of ANNOYING letters.

I'm suprised that he got that many years, but I think he got what was coming to him.. "used the Internet to peddle pornography and sham products and services" I'm glad hes in jail and I woln't be getting any emails from him for a while..

They estimate he sent out 10 MILLION emails per day. That means he has most likely sent each and every one of us hundreds of emails over the years.

$750,000 a month? He'll probably have millions hidden away in offshore accounts and he'll be living it up when he gets out. He'll likely get out in 5-6 years on parole as mentioned previously, he'll probably use those years to dream of what he'll do with his money when he gets out. I have no sympathy, hopefully it sends out a strong message to all other spammers.

HI

Kill some one and you get 15-25 and you may be out in 15 for good behavior... now for a spammer give him 2-3 and just take off all the money he has made from spamming.... or just tax him 50% of his income for the next 10-20 years .. But do not give him the same as a murder...

Thanks
Tom Dahne

I wish I was rich, so I could send him 50,000 postcards a day: Let him try to find all of his legal documents and communications amidst all THAT.

Ok, its already been stated that he'll probably get out in 5-6 years. How is 5 years the same as 15? I cant see it. Its so easy to hide money, he'll probably emigrate when he gets out and he'll start tapping into the millions he's hidden away. I doubt the authorities would be able to find the money, let alone take it out of an offshore account. Not a very good logic.

Although it is a high punishment, it probably also just is to sex an example. Prevent new spammers from trying the same thing. Although the money to be gained from it is a lot, these sort of punishments will definately make one think twice.

And you should realise that these spammers do hog up a lot of resources, although the exact amount of spam is unknown, the estimate lies within 80%-85%, being over 55 billion per day.

With no spam going around a lot of resources would be saved.

He might just move to a country like Russia where they don't jail spammers. I don't understand some of the sympathy this guy is getting. He broke the law on a daily basis...minute to minute...all for profit and greed. He might as well have robbed your grandma.

Did he get to keep the money?

It's Democracy. Plain BS as usual. As somebody said, it is too much for spamming alone. Why don't they jail those people who ring our doorbell every minute? Or those who call us on the phone for so-called Direct-Marketing? And what about those who fill up our mailbox with xyz crap? I hate spammers, and they need a lesson, but why are they punished more than rapists etc?

Yeah it's Democracy but it's also because we a nation of laws. Without our laws we would be...well...Europe. And who says he is getting more than a rapist? It's also the compounding of his charges...you are not charged with rape once if you rape 100 people...you are charged 100 times. This guy spent YEARS raping email boxes. There are plain clear regulations and laws. He knew he was breaking the law yet he continued profiting and doing it.

And never doubt for a second this immoral person sent out porn spam that undoubtedly was seen by minors.
