Just have a look at this list of official EURID appointed .EU registrars. In the past 1 to 2 weeks some 400 United States registrars have been added. A whole lot of them are in Bellevue, Vancouver, New York, Portland and some other states. They all all have the same telephone number.None have a link to a website.

HMMMMMMM I think our chances of getting a .EU name are diminishing more and more.

I think this needs to be questioned and if nessecary exposed.

I have sent EURID the following e-mail

Dear sir/madam
It is with high concern that I observed that in the past 2 weeks suddenly at least 400 USA based registrars for .eu domains have been added to your official registrar list. What is also of major concern is that whole lists of them come from the same area and have the same telephone numbers and addresses. Also not one has a link to a site. What is happening here??? Are we individuals being conned here?? Are these legitimate registrars??? I get the feeling here is a big scam going on and I fear the small individual who wants to get a few names is going to be the dupe.

Ps. I have posted this on the NAMEPROS board voicing my concern
Please feel free to explain the situation there.
Regards
Fred

My god-- that doesn't look good at all! :td:

My biggest fear there is that they're making these 'fake' bodies for their own purposes, to make sure their submit lists are small and tidy to snag all the premium names on April 7 for themselves... eager to hear what their reply to you is!!

Further to that, Vancouver is in CANADA... not the United States. Those address they have listed don't even appear to exist.

Something is definitely up here...! Well spotted!

Curse those American devils... Hey wait... I am one...

I agree with you BM that there should be some more investigation of that. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck....

Doh! Sorry about that, my American geography isn't up to par... :guilty:

I just rang the number, they answered the phone "Hello, SnapNames" --!

The lady explained that all those name are their clients websites... then I was transferred to support and they said that none of the clients' sites will be going live with the EU registrations until after the Landrush begins... maybe we're okay here. Fingers crossed anyway.

According to this , each accredited registrar must make a prepayment of at least EU10,000 (!!!) .

According to the same page , the accreditation procedure for a registrar-to-be should have been completed before the 20th of March so as to participate from the start of the landrush .

Since you say that you just saw those registrars appearing it means that the people who applied "rushed" so as to be ready for the landrush .

Even if they are not putting up sites for now , their "rush" to complete the procedure (and the overall timing) shows that they want to be able to register domains from the beginning . Maybe it is a way to circumvent the EU residency requirement for some wealthy domainers . Or maybe they people behind this thought that they could register more domains and faster through multiple registrars .

Just out of curiosity and a little off topic but are all of you guys planning to try and register best domains? What are the chances of actually getting one when everyone will be trying to get the best premium one word .eu's ?

It seems the .eu people haven't learned any lessons from the .info and .biz
launches years back. Or they probably didn't care.

The third world war is about to break out in cyberspace. The super-efficient German and Austrian registrars were about to make a ligthning advance to conqueor the .eu territory. American computers are massing on the other side of the Atlantic to thwart the teutonic thrist for cyber-territory and turn .eu cyberspace into another American colony.

I might not agree 100% with the analogy, but

i think it's because of the billing address of the credit card that was used to pay for the registration, that is :imho:

And if you believe that one I've got a bridge you might be interested in :)

Actually it might be sort of true. They may simply use whatever registration resources are allocated to each registrar but have a single front end user interface. Same results though, they'll grab a lot more names than someone who only owns one registrar.

I imagine each registrar will register several thousand names, so they'll burn through that quick enough.

You can be sure that's what it's mostly about.

I think we need a plan B: What if there is a glitch on the first few seconds due to massive traffic? How do we have a plan B to make sure that we can snatch a good name?

Here is the reply I received from EURID to my question as posed near the start of this thread.

Dear Sir,

As you have seen on our website, we do have registrars from all over Europe and many other countries including the US. All accredited registrars shown in our list are separate companies who all have separate agreements with EURid.

If two or more registrars choose to cooperate it is nothing that EURid can have an opinion about. There are for instance already many European registrars with subsidiaries in more than one country for which each local office is an accredited registrar with EURid.

EURid's concern is that all accredited .eu registrar should be able to help its customers in a good way and be following the EC regulations and the registrar agreement regardless of which country they are from.

Kind regards,

The EURid team

They have a valid point. regardless of how dodgy it is I don't think there's anything they can do about it. Perhaps they should add a โ€œbeneficial ownerโ€ clause to their contracts?
