    Hey NP,

    Funny story...

Negotiations for a domain weren't going the way the enduser wanted, and since I didn't register the domain privately, he registered my full name.

He has proposed a trade of my full name for the domain he contacted me about.

Though, he didn't register my name privately either.

So should I register his full name?

Mind you, I just found out that the brandable 6L I picked upis also his last name.

Or, if by registering his name I open myself up to too much legally? Even if done privately?

Me registering the 6L brandable shows no intent.

Him registering my full name shows full intent.

Me registering his full name would show equal intent.

Do two wrongs make a right if I'm being blackmailed?

I would think that if you had wanted to, or really cared to reg your full name..you would have done so by now.

So tell him such that 'If you wanted it, it wouldn't have been available to reg. So good luck with it, and though you aren't interested in it, he can maybe search out everyone else with that name and see 'if' they'll buy from him.'

    Great response HawkEye!!!

I try to not act off impulse, but it's hard not to get offended and want to go on the offensive. This is definitely the high road, I'll give it a few more minutes to decide on my response. Thanks a ton for your input!

I would not register his full name. It would be useless to you and it would only show immaturity.

Stay professionnal and keep negociating for the only domain that is relevant, the 6L brandable.

You both are right, and I thank you for shedding this light.

I just realized the other person who shares the same name as me (not related) is a law student at the same alma matter. Perhaps, this law student, might want his .com and some law practice experience. I have some email accounts the law student would appreciate in pro quo.

Then, recruit him to domain law, and have a lawyer with the same name as me... :D

First of all, it has nothing to do with blackmail.

(n): the action, treated as a criminal offense, of demanding money from a person in return for not revealing compromising or injurious information about that person.

It might or might not meet some criteria for extortion, but why even go there?

Maybe my legal jargon is off, extortion or blackmail, it seems very quid pro quo in devaluing the name of my .com. But yes your right, in that personally taking this as blackmail/extortion will cause clouded judgement to the 6L brandable.

Just, I'll give you your FirstandLastName.com for the domain you just quoted, MyLastName.com, for $200 seems shady. But besides the point, since nothing malicious is on myname.com nor is his.

I'd say he does meet the "legal" definition of being a d**k.

Haha, touche! He's from New England, so I assumed some tough skin was needed for the following transcript of our conversation:

Some information has been bleeped out to protect our privacy.

Me: Hi - Did you call about a domain? 5:49 PM

    Him: Yes 5:50 PM

Him: I would like to discuss a transfer when you have time 5:51 PM

    Me: Which domain? 5:54 PM

Him: Nov 2nd purchase 5:55 PM

    Him: ****** 5:56 PM

Me: Forgive me, but if you can't provide the domain name you're interested in, than I have to believe this spam/fraud. 5:57 PM

Me: Ok, yes, I am familiar with that .com 5:57 PM

Me: I haven't had a chance to determine my plans for this domain. Would you like to talk about this over the phone? Or, is this something we can correspond about via email? 6:04 PM

Him: I am happy to discuss over the telephone. I would like to know what you want for the domain. 6:16 PM

Him: Or you can text me 6:16 PM

Me: You are welcome to text an offer. Or, if it's a more complex matter, we can arrange a time to chat this weekend. 6:40 PM

Him: If you do not want to text an offer I will offer $25 if not, i think it would be best to find a time to discuss on the phone. 6:49 PM

Me: I see. This domain has a 3 month hold with Domain.com. So unless you create a domain.com account, you will have to wait 3 months I can transfer it to your preferred registrar. Though, if you change your offer to 25 BTC, I'm sure I can consider your offer before the 3 month transfer period ends. 7:09 PM

Him: I do not know what BTC is. I can create a domain.com account this weekend. 8:06 AM

Him: I would like to settle this by Monday if possible. 10:01 AM

Me: BTC stands for Bitcoin. A virtual currency that is valued at $370 per coin. Let me know when you're domain.com account is created and we can discuss escrow.com fees. 10:04 AM

    Me: Sounds good! 10:04 AM

Me: Shall I set up an escrow.com purchase order for this domain in the amount of 25 BTC ($9,250 USD) I hadn't planned on selling this domain, but with the surging price in BTC, I can't resist. 10:29 AM

Him: U want 9,250 for the website? I said $25 USD 1:15 PM

Him: BTC prices have dropped 50 dollars today 1:16 PM

Him: Please let me know and I will venmo you the $25 dollars. 1:17 PM

Him: You are crazy to think a poor kid has that kind of money to help his sick aunt and grandparents with a domain 1:17 PM

Him: I have also purchased other domains that you would be interested in and would be happy to make a straight domain for domain exchange. 1:19 PM

Me: BTC prices increased $12 today. Of course I didn't expect you to have 25 BTC, but then again you shouldnt have expected me to take $25 for a domain I JUST bought. If you want it for that kind of price, wait a few months, if I still have it, we'll talk But for now, just use one of your other domains your sick aunt / GP 6:18 AM

Me: $200 and its yours if you create a domain.com account and complete the transaction by monday. 7:04
    AM

Him: $200 is still too much. I can try to see if they can pay $40 or 50 usd. Would you be interested in exchanging TheNameIWant.com for YourFullName.com ? 11:44 AM

Him: Straight up? If not I will go back and ask the family. 11:46 AM

Me: If I wanted MyName.com, I would own it. Just like if I wanted YourName, I would own it. But before checking the WHOIS on MyName.com and noticing your name is *** ***** from U of M, I had no idea ****** was your last name. To me it is a great dictionary word that will make a great brand. 1:04 PM

Me: Though, there is a Law Student by the name of My Name at the University of Miami. I'll send him a message with your contact info to see if he wants the domain or experience in UDRP cases to obtain ownership of him domain. Because of your actions in registering my name, this domain is no longer for sale. 1:06 PM

I'd raise your price and not bother with registering his name.

    The saga continues:

Him: There is no one else that would have any interest. Let me know when you change your mind. You know how to reach me. Thanks. Max 3:38 PM

I them emailed this transcript to the law student who also shares the same name as me, and of whom I've had similar conversations with about use having the same name and usernames.

Furthermore, this has me questioning even harder how to get in touch with certain celebrities to of which I hold their .coms to transfer ownership of their domain for free. Or, in a perfect world to be extended an opportunity to run a fan site for them.

I supposed I'll redirect it to godaddy (where he regged my name) and post it as a godaddy BIN for a much higher amount?

Any reason why you decided to not register your firstnamelastname.com before? There has been so many "do you own your firstnamelastname.com/lastname.com" threads here on NP these last months, that I thought most members would own their firstnamelastname.com by now:xf.grin:

The only answer I can give is I didn't think the name was in danger, and there are a few other people with the same name as mine. Since I didn't have a use for it, I left it out there.

Thank you for your bluntness by the way. Because of this, I just registered the name I go by: ChrisLASTNAME.com He can keep or deal with the law student ChristopherLASTNAME.com :)

Don't worry about it... chances are he will drop it come renewal time... and wonder why he wasted a reg.

(assuming you ignore it / him and don't make a fuss... as he did it to bother you. If you're not bothered, he's not interested).

If it were me - I would tell him to keep it, enjoy it, and I would move on to concentrate on better and more productive things. Life's way too short.

Domaining is entertaining enough. I often wonder if other domainers search history looks as sporadic as mine. I spent a half hour today looking through "Puppy Bow" images on Google. Twas a good half hour indeed.

The law student who shares my name responded with interest and resources to take ownership of his (our) name. He was planning on registering it anyways. I gave him the info of the domain owner.

...I'll be sure to keep this thread posted if anything comes from it.

I just discovered the uncle in the text is a CIO to a global hedge fund. Days like today make me wonder what domaining has gotten myself into, lol.

I can't understand why you are helping out the guy who is trying to extort you by passing on the law student's (Christopher) info. to him. Or am I missing something here?
