Some newbie questions

Hello,

I'm obviously new to domaining and while I'm still reading as much as I can on the forums, there's only so much a person can read per day.
So I was hoping you could all explain some things for me.

First, getting the CPC. I know (most of) you use google traffic estimator and then check how much it would cost if you were to advertise for these keywords, but how do you pick the price? Do you go for the maximum or the average price? Or just with whatever price has a satisfactory CTR?

Secondly, selling new domains. Do any of you sell newly registered domains immediately or do you wait for the 60 day transfer restriction to pass? I know you can transfer it with the same registrar (which in my case would be whois.com (or is that register.com? they confuse me)), but isn't that too much of a hassle for potential buyers (if they're not with that registrar)?

I'm not really planning on trying to make quick sales (nor do I have any illusions of being able to) as I like the development and designing aspect of websites, but I'm curious and a even a bit reluctant to put parked domains up for sale (eventhough it seems nobody will ever visit them lol).

Finally, do you have to pay to put a website up for sale/auction on any of the major websites? (I know, I could simply try and find out, but I'm typing right now anyway, and there's more to learn and read! ;))

Thanks for taking your time to read and reply. :)

1. You can price domains based on comparable sales > You can check domain sales history on http://namebio.com / http://dnsaleprice.com
Read this thread as well: http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/83628-report-completed-domain-name-sales-here.html

Also check out http://domainsherpa.com for great domainer interviews. You'll learn more about pricing.

2. Some domain registrars allow domains to be pushed to another user account. Ex: name.com, godaddy.com, moniker.com

3. You can park the domain or put a sales page. Make sure you list it at Sedo.com, Afternic.com, Aftermarket.com, & GoDaddy.com. Remove the domains from other sites once it is sold.

4. It's up to you. You can put a for sale page or redirect the domain to your developed site. I usually setup a one page site with an rss feed of my developed site. Ex. chessgames.ca

I use Godaddy and I have hand-regged many names and sold them the same week for low xxx to endusers who use Godaddy or don't mind signing up since it only takes a minute.

Automated appraisals are worthless.

:talk:

and some of those domainer interviews have same value or can confuse you even more than you are now.

when they start interviewing those who "lost money" in domaining, then you'll learn something.

those are the stories you want to read about.

Automated appraisals are worthless.

they are not, you just take them with a grain of salt as "appraisals" and do your own research on the things they point out such as similar sales, keyword popularly, other TLDs availability, alexa rank, pr, etc, etc

Transfer is normally not an issue. If a buyer wants the domain bad enough to buy it they don't mind it being at a different registrar than they normally use.

It is possible to sell a hand reg domain and sell it quickly, but you could spend months searching and never find anything available thats worth more than a couple hundred dollars. If it's available, its probably because no one wants it.

Domains are worth what a buyer is willing to pay. I never put a set price on my domains. I wait for offers. This gives you an idea of what a buyer will pay and you negotiate from there. See domaining for beginners domain value explained The google keyword tool is a good way to valuate domains for buying purposes, just make sure you use "exact match" as apposed to broad match whe researching.

---------- Post added at 04:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:28 PM ----------

keyword tool valuation formula exact match searches - 75% x cpc x 24 months = value if it's not a .com extension subtract 90% from value. This in an end user value. For buying to resell subtract 90% from the end value.

This is not a fool proof method. but correlates with actual sales closer than any method I personally have found.
