Hey all,

I'm interested in getting started with domaining. I've been reading through this forum and have learned a lot. I'm really glad to have found it -- it's very helpful.

I have a few more questions that I wasn't able to find the answer to. If anyone could help with my newbie questions, I'd really appreciate it.

1. Does the 60 day lock apply to push, or just transfers? Is there any way around it?

2. When it comes time to sell, other than listing it for sale on the marketplace here or other forums, are auction sites decent? I know there are some popular ones.

3. Does aging add much value? Why so? How can I tell how aged a domain is?

4.The domains available for sale on godaddy/register.com -- are these brand new never registered domains or are some of them previously registered that expired? How do I find out what the domain's history is?

5. Any other tips for newbie?

Thanks a lot for the help :$:

1. Transfers only. No way around it. Just push the domain instead.
2. I use Sedo, Afternic, GoDaddy.
3. Ages doesn't matter if you have a domain somebody wants. An aged domain only indicates somebody wanted it in the past. Look up it's whois record to find it's age.
4. They are newly available domains unless they are in the Auction section. Archive.org is the best advisor of a domains web history. DomainTools.com paid service give you the best whois history.
5.Yes. read, read, read before you buy.

Thanks for the help!

Since most of the "good" .coms are taken, in order to really get them at a wholsale price (enough to resell to an enduser), you need to grab them when they expire, right? I've been reading the forum to try and learn more about that process, but do you know if there is a good thread or guide somewhere on the basics of grabbing expiring domains?

Thanks again.

You just bid on expiring domains at (mostly) SnapNames and NameJet, and possibly GoDaddy. If it's a Pre-Release (being sold by the registrar before it drops) it will retain it's age. If it's an Expiring Domain (it will drop) it's a free for all for who grabs the domain when it drops. Best to place your bid at the last possible time (to hide your interest in the domain from other drop-catchers).

Godaddy are useless at the drop-catching part. They only catch domains that drop and were not picked up at any other drop-catching service. ie: you could hand-reg the domain and beat them (But they still have their place, imho. For example when your are unavailable to do the hand-reg).

SnapNames has the widest selection of partner registrars and the biggest drop-catching operation. They capture the domain you want about 80% of the time. Although it might go to a 3day auction if there is more than 1 back-order.

Hope that helps.
