Some Newbie Questions

Hi All,

I am thinking of buying some domains to park, but I have a few questions:

1) Do I need to form a corporation to do this?
2) Is sedo the best place to park? I have read about ParkingPanel.com, what would you all recommend? (And why do you have to apply for an account with them??)
3) If I buy the domain and park it with someone, is that all I do? If it is a good name, will it start to get hits on its own or do I need to start paying google for clicks through adwords?
4) I am also interested in casino domains. Is there a good casino affiliate someone could recommend?

Thanks for the help!

No, I'm sure very few of us here have formed a corporation.

2) Is sedo the best place to park? I have read about ParkingPanel.com, what would you

Do a forum search for "parking" or "best place to park" etc, there's a really good thread floating around here with suggestions. I use NameDrive and Sedo.

3) If I buy the domain and park it with someone, is that all I do? If it is a good name, will it start to get hits on its own or do I need to start paying google for clicks through adwords?

If you park the name with any parking company, you cannot pay for traffic, it has to be natural traffic, otherwise they can ban you. If the name has natural type-in traffic, or a ton of backlinks because it is an expired domain name, then yeah, all you really have to do is sit back and watch the money pour in. (After choosing a good keyword, and in some cases, a template to use, of course)

4) I am also interested in casino domains. Is there a good casino affiliate someone could recommend?

I'm pretty sure there is a thread about that one too.

From my experience Sedo definitely is not the best - I used to get very little traffic and almost no clicks. I don't know which is the best - I am with NameDrive they are a bit better than Sedo and the others I have tried but still not great.

Bodis.com might be better once it gets up and running.

Remember you can't promote you parked sites in any way. Except possibly signatures in forums.

Thanks! I now understand that I cannot promote a parked site. But if I make an affiliate site, that links over to an online casino, I could promote that, is this correct?

If I choose a few available domains, and park them, will I just start to get traffic out of nowhere going to my site? I suppose that may be the million dollar question, deciding which sites will get hits.

Nope, not even that.

It's the million dollar question that has been asked quite a bit already and has been answered to some extent by those who have experience. There is a wealth of information/software/tools available to you, just do your research and then get your hands dirty, you'll learn your own tricks.

Research-Research-Research!

Is it better to buy a domain from someone or just think up a name that hasnt been used yet? I have some good ones that are available, but how do I know if I can make anything of it? How do I develop a site that I know little about? And sorry for the dumb questions!

If you chose a good then then yes. People open their browsers and type in a name where they hope to find a related website. For instance if somebody is looking for piano lessons the person might search in google or instead doing so he might as well type directly to his browser www pianolessons com. Of course a small percentage of people are doing this but depending on the name this can mean huge traffic.

This is called type-in traffic. Type-in traffic is good since it is very likely to be stable and increase with time as the Internet becomes more popular. On the other hand, traffic from backlinks is not good because it will decrease.

The question is how to find domain names with type in traffic. I wish you good luck on that.

If you are new to domaining what happens is that you have many domains in mind just to register and you will find out in a few months all those names were actually crap. Don't do that. Don't register any domains yet.

If you have some money go to tdnam.com and find a good domain that has at least 10 bidders. Spend all your money on a single domain.

You can also use this site to check out which keywords are popular - http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ - type in a word (or phrase) and see how many people have searched for it

Also don't forget that with some domain name registrars you get 5 days to see if you like any new name you register, if you decide you don't like it you can cancel it and get your money back or get a credit - moniker and godaddy do this.

Let me show you how to search for a good name at tdnam:

1. Open this link: www.tdnam.com
2. On top left click "advanced search"
3. On the right panel,
  • Tick "Exclude Dashes"
  • Tick "Exclude Digits"
  • Tick "Expired Name Auction"
  • Tick "com"
and click search.
4. Now sort results according number of bids by clicking on #bids on the green bar.

You will see traffic details for these names as well since these are all expired names and when they are expired godaddy puts a parking page on them. You can just open any of these expired names and you will see the parking page where it also tells you when the name was expired.
Other domains at tdnam, for instance those sold by domain owners, will not have traffic details unless they are parked at godaddy which is unlikely.

Godaddy domains are auctioned 24 days after they expire. So if you find a newly expired godaddy domain you know when to check tdnam.com.

For all other expired domains the best place is snapnames.com. But be aware. Don't buy a few averege domains. Buy one very good domain.

Of course you could buy good domains in this forum as well. If you buy a traffic domain then be ready to pay 60 times of its monthly revenue which is still a good investment. Not many domainers are selling their traffic domains. There are also some domains with questionable source of traffic. It has to be natural traffic.

If I buy a domain at tdnam.com do I still get the 5 days to return it? I would like to buy one domain, just to test the waters and learn how to optimize, etc. When I did an advanced search at tdnam, the first result in the list is moneygrams.com. Traffic is 784 and the current bid is just over $1100 (33 bids so far). So this means if I buy the domain, I could park it and get the 784 uniques at my parked page and start making a little $$$?

I guess the other route is to develop the site. What if I come across a site like landscaping.com, and decide to develop it, but know nothing about landscaping. How is it possible? Or do people only buy domains and develop them if they already know about the topic?

Like i said, I'd like to buy a domain to get started and learn. Can anyone recommend a good one to start with? Maybe that I could make 50 cents with a day? how much could I get a domain like this for?

To get a cheap domain go to Moniker and type in some names to see if they have been registered already. Go for a .com as that is the most popular extension - it will cost you around 8$ - then go to NameDrive and sign up for an account (free). You need some sort of generic name. That will be hard to find as most of them have been registered already, but the best thing to do is to play around with the search facility at Moniker to see what you can come up with. All in all you will spend around $8 - it is unlikely you will make much money - maybe 10 cents a day but it will give you an idea of what you need to do. For example I came up with campingabroad.com which I thought was a good name but it gets very few visitors.

Expensive names in auctions do not have a 5 day trial period.

Well I bought MyNewRecipes.com. how long does it normaly take to develop a site if it gets no clicks while parked?

If I have to develop it myself I know php, javascript, html, css, etc.
