Size matters, but does age?

Do you prefer domains that have age but no development?
or new and developed? or just old/er

I just looked in my moniker account and I have a 12 year old domain LOL [brain fog] forgot it was there.

The question isin't about ".com" or a specific "niche" - just looking for your thoughts on age, in a general scope.

Thanks :)

I think you find that people are usually on one side or the other, I think there are people who seek aged domains and overvalue at times on just age, where the name has no history, no advertisers and no searches. Now if its for a product or service and has age I think the age is of great interest.

In 2009 this is what Matt Cutts had to say:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1_1NQWQJ2Q"]How much does a domain's age affect its ranking? - YouTube[/ame]

Then here in 2010

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pnpg00FWJY"]How does Google determine domain age, and is it important for ranking? - YouTube[/ame]

I'm finding the first question I've been getting is about the age then they ask about traffic...
Traffic I don't have, so wasn't sure if the age will carry them without it?

Of-course domain age matters. The more the age of a domain more trustworthy it would be. But keep in mind that it should not be a spammed domain.

Who told you size matters?

None of it matters imho.

If it did you wouldn't see thousands of 10+ year old names dropping every day.

Domains are like wine (i'm talking as a collector, not developer)
imho

If someone emails me via whois about one of my domains asking me about traffic, I don't reply.

Why would that be Razor ? It certainly is a legitimate question. To reply you don't sell or price your names off of the traffic I completely understand, but many care about traffic.

why, cuz you know it's just another domainer getting ready to lowball you?

For some of my domains, I'm willing to wait for end users, the vast majority of whom probably don't care what the traffic is, how old it is, what the pagerank is, etc, particularly when they are looking to brand their online presence.

I think traffic/revenue stats are primarily of interest to just domainers, and I really don't care to try and convince anyone to buy my domain with stats, screenshots, etc. If it's a good name that stands on its on, someone will want it.

Sure I could be losing out on a possible sale. Most of my domains are now at fixed price at the various auction sites, and I'm really not losing any sleep over any potential lost opportunities by not negotiating offers and chasing end-users.

That's just me, I just don't need the hassel.

And RazorNF said what I always believe in.
You want a domain, you buy it.
You want information about the domain, you really looking just for a reason to either lowball or not buy.

Then there are the so called buyers who just do not like to buy a domain that one has just hand regged!

So the age of a domain?
Nah, it is more of what is the domain and is there someone or a bunch of someones who would buy it, and at your price.

I like old age domains (pre-2000) with no development. I can easily develop them with good contents. I don't believe in typical domainers stating that "If you build it they will come" No they won''t come if you build some crappy site.

I'm finding the first question I've been getting is about the age then they ask about traffic...
Traffic I don't have, so wasn't sure if the age will carry them without it?
Try to develop a mini-site with relevant good contents then you will get some traffic.

I recently developed Gu.am and I'm getting some traffic (it's not even completed yet - not even half way done) but only getting 30-40 unique visitors per day.

Some nice hacks in your sig, xman..

Wendy,
As to age, if that mattered as much as some think, I'd be worth a billion bux...

Like DU said... a crappy 10yo domain is still just a crappy domain that was rereg'd too many times. :notme:
On the other hand, most of the Top Gens & Cat Killers were reg'd long ago, so that would be a yes, age matters.

Peace,
Cy

I own a 10yo domain that was dropped 5 times. Changed hands from domainer to domainer. Inspected the site thru Internet Archive and saw it carried mostly parked pages for the last 10 years. Domainers only look at the "name" and see it sounds nice. But they have no idea how to develop it. I am now using the domain as an e-commerce site after it was dropped a 6th time, and is one of my revenue earners.

When a domain gets dropped so many times, you will have less competitors from domainers. Because most domainers try to avoid picking up abused domains with an ugly drop record.

There was also an 8yo domain i couldn't get my hands on. The domain is a very nice brandable to me, but every time it was expiring (perhaps due to no buyer interest), it gets back-ordered ALL THE TIME by yet another domainer.

Until finally it went to Pending Delete. I thought Reberry would scoop it up. But he passed. So i finally regged the sucker using a $3 dollar Godaddy coupon. Used it for e-commerce as well.

Yes it is true. If you Build It, They Will Come.

Thanks Cy. I have plenty of them I collected them way back when most domainers didn't think they have value in them. I sold a few in the range of $xx,xxx. Now they are in the hack cellar to be aged

Age alone matters not.

What matter is that. are these aged domains have specific target audience? or niche?

Neither size or age matter. The only thing that matters is how you use it :hearts:

But seriously, I love aged domains as long as they make sense!

Age is a bonus but the domain itself is the determining factor. Rather have a few year old domain that is good over a 10+ year turd.

If someone emails me via whois about one of my domains asking me about traffic, I don't reply.

Ditto, got a guy now that has emailed me 3 or 4 days in a row asking about a domain with no offer presented. I ignored him as negotiations begin when an offer is made and now he has made a minimum bid on Sedo. I have a message on all my sedo domains that basically says if you don't receive a response in 48 hours raise your bid or find another domain to purchase. Too busy with developed sites to entertain tire kickers. See if he raises in a few days.
