SILENT auction at TRAFFIC WEST - The RUNNING COMMENTARY thread - NP REPORTERS NEEDED!

First of all, kudos to acc for the original idea suggested in the .mobi forum.

The rationale for this thread is many fold:

1. The vast majority of us do not have access to the silent auction area - it is passworded and apparently only accessible to TRAFFIC West attendees (at least not before March 10).

2. The vast majority of domains for sale at TRAFFIC are in the silent auction - and some of them are high profile gems.

3. There are bound to be several NP members who would wish to provide running commentary when interesting bids come in - and the value thereof would be multiplied many times if it's all in one thread so people know where to find it on NamePros

4. We will not clutter the rest of the forum with identically themed threads

8j.com closed at $8,652.00 a short time after I posted the list. I haven't seen a 2 char .com sell in a while, but is seems like a pretty good price for the seller.

I passed. W is not technically a "premium" letter, and I liked PN.net a lot more. Was just commenting on the fact that despite the lower price, it may not be that much of a worse name and may ultimately be the best deal. At the prices they were at, I could only afford one, so I went with the one I liked the most.

It's funny, I would have thought that LL.net, especially the ones for bid in this auction, would have totally smoked 8j.com, but I must be underestimating NL and LN .coms. I guess for rarity sake, they're worth what they're worth, but beyond that, what would 8j really be worth? What kind of site goes on a name like that?

Seems like most of the bidders in the live and silent auctions were only interested in .com and .mobis. While some might see this as bad news of the other extensions not heavily bid on, I see it as an opportunity.

Check out 8j.net: reroutes to district "8J" for Albany, OR Public Schools. I can imagine extraordinary value for something like "M3" (or "M5", "M6"--you get the idea), but for an NL name, which, when that specific NL is searched, returns school district and city district related sites? Perhaps a major product launch is in the offing. Otherwise, some serious coin for a collector's item (with the caveat that this probably isn't going down in value any time soon).

Perhaps "snap" could take their expertise in to a similar arena, probably no time, making too much money as it is

I strongly agree with .com being king by a mile. The question really becomes would you rather have an ok .com or a top generic anything else.

I can't see any extension ever overtaking the mindset of .com being king.

Anywhere else, BAD LL.net names are going at $10k+...3 out of 4 of the ones in the silent auction were all-premium, with the 4th being WG, with W being close but no cigar to being a premium letter. I just spent the most I've ever spent on a name on PN.net, and I highly doubt I'll be regretting it any time soon. The .com-centric people are missing lots of opportunities IMO.

I guess those holding none .com's need to work harder to find buyers. My gut tells me most of the buyers at the auction were domainers more so than end users.

It's not completely over yet. I'm still in 1 name, and there's about 14 overall left with bids on them. Not sure how many total...I'm focused on the one I'm fighting for.

A tempting one would be CriminalMinds.com, but Disney strikes me as a company that would ruthlessly go after someone with a TM of theirs, which unfortunately Criminal Minds is.

RVCampers.com has been a pretty active late bloomer, 12 bids, now sitting at $21,494
