SILENT auction at TRAFFIC WEST - The RUNNING COMMENTARY thread - NP REPORTERS NEEDED!

First of all, kudos to acc for the original idea suggested in the .mobi forum.

The rationale for this thread is many fold:

1. The vast majority of us do not have access to the silent auction area - it is passworded and apparently only accessible to TRAFFIC West attendees (at least not before March 10).

2. The vast majority of domains for sale at TRAFFIC are in the silent auction - and some of them are high profile gems.

3. There are bound to be several NP members who would wish to provide running commentary when interesting bids come in - and the value thereof would be multiplied many times if it's all in one thread so people know where to find it on NamePros

4. We will not clutter the rest of the forum with identically themed threads

So who wants to be our citizen reporter(s)?

I was told by my rep that sellers would not be able to access it unless they signed up to bid. I asked how do we know if our names got bids & the answer was something along the line of most bidding occurs on the last day anyway. I asked if we had to wait until it was over & then we would get an e-mail. I was told yes that is how it would work. Personally I think that is a crock of shit for sellers.

Can anyone explain the rationale for not letting us mere mortals see the silent bidding at all?

I understand why we shouldn't be able to bid, but not being able to see the bidding action?

I'm no high-roller, but I probably would be bidding on several domains in the silent auction but for the $499 proxy bid price. Even if I didn't have any of the high bids at the silent auction, my bidding would at least push up the sales prices.

EDIT: Apparently the $499 fee is applied to any purchase you make in the silent auction, so it appears the $499 fee is to act as encouragement to win at least one domain auction.

As the hallway fiasco ( confirmed or not?) allowed "buyers" to find out what reserve prices were do not expect any bids until the last moment. Don't know if this applies to those orignally accepted for the silent auction
