Hi,

I'm creating a website with a long domain name. I've done a similar project previously. Last time I registered a short domain ccTLD and got a developer to create our own custom short URL service. This allowed us to create links and promote own own short URLs, which bring people to our long domain name.

Times have changed and from what I gather, the short URL doesn't have the importance it once did.
In looking for a short domain, which needs to be relevant to our name, I'm wondering how short such a domain needs to be. Twitter uses 3 characters and many other brands use more characters.

The minimum characters for a domain used to be best, but nowadays can you suggest any reason why any particular number of characters is better (or worse)?

I've tried googling this but get irrelevant results. I'm wondering if someone will say keep it under some number e.g. 6 characters Because there's a technological or other reason why beyond 6 (or whatever) has disadvantages?

While looking for a very short URL, I've stumbled upon a 9 character (incl TLD) which would be good. It's very memorable/brandable but isn't short! But having learnt that short is less important now, I'm left wondering, how many characters is OK?

Thank you
