PETA's announcement late last summer that it planned to reserve one of the new .xxx domain extensions was met with both scorn and amusement. The animal rights organization, well-known for using clever marketing strategies to spread its messages, said the intention for the domain was to create a "pornography site that draws attention to the plight of animals."

Naturally, the media and people alike were curious as to what such a mix might mean for content. In the early months, I wasn't even sure if PETA exactly knew. But in a January interview, President Ingrid Newkirk said that what's in store will be both titillating and shocking "but perhaps not in the way that people think."

Yesterday, PETA took the wraps off its new domain, revealing a splash page with a signup for those interested in getting the news when the site officially launches.

"We're not quite ready to reveal PETA.xxx yet, but we promise that when we do, there will definitely be a real happy ending," the site reads. Oh boy.

In response to those saying that this website is yet another way PETA disrespects women, Newkirk fired back in her interview, calling such accusations "fiddlesticks."

"I am a woman, and I am 62 and a bit," she said. "I have appeared in the I'd Rather Go Naked ads. That may give you a shudder, but it's true. And we have ample examples of men who have appeared in them, too. They just don't get the same press. We pretty much do anything and everything. It's just that some things get press and some things don't."

Newkirk challenged critics to speak with any of the women who have agreed to participate in past campaigns; using actress Taraji Henson as an example. "Ask her, and she'll say, I'm a powerful woman. I use my body as a political statement. I'm entitled to. We don't live in Afghanistan. Leave me alone."

To sign up for PETA.xxx, proceed at your own risk (from work is probably not a great idea) and jump here.

Peta is a crackpot organization anyway.....they are absolute ultra left wing nut jobs who think animals should have the same rights as humans.

...called "marketing outrageously", they are offering a type of absolution.

A donation and abstinence from a meat and fur based lifestyle grants you guilt-free porn, so to speak. Gotta admit, it's clever as all get up...

Is there anything that bunch won't do for publicity?

Anyone who thinks they're a such stellar organization, may want to do some research.

Like:
  • How many animals do they actually SAVE?
  • Do they run or support any animal rescue groups and if so what is their placement rate?
  • Where does the money go?
  • Do they have an agenda above and beyond the seemingly-harmless things which they promote so vocally? (hint: look for transcripts of interviews with the group leaders)

To bring this little rant back on topic: So I guess an xxx domain is useful if it will get you more attention? Or did they decide it best to grab the domain and use it to their advantage before someone else did? (Though RES would have probably taken care of that)

The .XXX Registry Owners should block all domain applications that will NOT offer pornographic content. If PETA opens an authentic porn site, that would qualify. If people think PETA is truly insane after doing so, that's another matter altogether.

Then again, if the Pope grabbed Vatican.XXX, they should be obliged to publish pornography as well. Otherwise, it's a further proof that this entire .XXX raket is just a money-milking scheme, and all these protect-the-minors BS is just a ruse.

That would be a bad idea for the registry to do. Let's see, enforce a rule as you say and have minimal sites/registrations or leave it wide open and earn way more money from registrations? Tough choice!

Trying to enforce a policy like you've suggested has been attempted by mtld (mobile ready only). That policy got ditched quick and the extention went kaboom. Other factors were also at hand but you get the point. It's not wise to paint yourself in a corner.

It's hard to draw the line. For instance mature contents vs mild adult vs harcore porn.
Also a question of culture and POV.
To an Iranian mullah regular Western advertising is obscene and downright porn - and you should all burn in hell :)
And that includes Bob Parson's online ventures :]

The registry is already judge and jury and has the power to nuke domains in secret, that is not a good thing.

I think .xxx should have remained outside the root, and exist only in an alternate root like new.net domains, if you really want to see .xxx domains get the plugin - problem solved :)

Then by pure logic, there is really NO LEGITIMATE DEMAND for these TLDs.

The "perceived" usefulness of these TLDs, is only good on paper-- inflated by artificial domainer demand and flawed economics of sustainability.

Bingo... nobody cares beside domainers and TM holders (aka blackmail victims).

I'm envisioning an awesome expansion of their "rather go naked" ad campaigns. I can just see Eva Mendes' "I'd rather do a bukkake than wear fur" ad now.

Before you guys get all excited, read that first post and the quote again - it might just be Ingrid, posting her home videos

I use my body as a political statement. I'm entitled to.

Damn, beat me to it! I am all for animal rights but this group is nothing something I would ever support.
