Hi NPers,
I need your advice on this request/inquiry from a prospective buyer of my domain.
He asked me if he buys my domain, parks it with blue host and redirects it to his site, will he show up on the first page of google when the keywords are searched for or does he need to build a site on the domain for it to show on first page of google. I am not good with SEO stuff.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Based on my understanding, parked/redirected domains do not get indexed by Google.

He's looking to forward your domain to an existing site is what I understood? Possibly, does your domain have a backlink profile? If you want to shoot me a quick pm I can check it out for you and let you know. But honestly, you won't know until you test it out. If your domain has no backlinks, then the answer is no.

It doesn't sound like the inquirer knows much about SEO either.

[This assumes your domain has backlinks. You can check at majestic.com]
Search for keyword, and see where his domain is ranking for the keyword. 301 redirect your domain to his home page or whatever URL is ranking for the keyword. Track the site's ranking after the redirect (301 SEO effect should be fairly immediate). If it goes up in ranking for the keyword, then you've got a great selling point to report to the potential buyer. It's pretty easy to do and you only lose your sales lander for a few days / 1 week while testing the 301.

Your buyer is even worse in SEO than yourself. To park a domain and to redirect it are two completely contradictory things. One can't park a domain and redirect it in the same time.

So the best advice to this guy from you would be to go fuck himself and to deliver the world from his dumbness. But since you probably hope to score a sale, that would not be so wise. So the second best answer would be "I'm only selling you the domain as is, I'm not an SEO expert and am not qualified to give SEO advice." Or, if you wish to educate him somehow, reply him like this: "In order to promote your website in Google, you could either build a site on the new domain and put a link from there to your existing site, or to create a 301 redirect at your registrar side to your existing site. You don't need to host the domain for creating redirect, it is done at the domain registrar panel."

Tell your potential buyer that you aren't an SEO expert so he should consult an SEO agency/expert to find an answer.
I'll also suggest you park the domain yourself to check how many visitors your domain gets and from where they come.

Thanks all. Buyer is not interested in the name. I will move on.

When asking the question, ‘how large a part does domain age play in website SEO?
