I would like to hear your opinions on this subject as one of my contacts wants to sell some of his Domain Names through Newspaper advertising in Canada, like whether it is a good idea and whether it is legal or not etc. Thanks in Advance.

I cannot conceive why someone might think that taking out a classified ad to sell a domain name was "illegal".
I've done it a couple times for pure geo names on meaningful TLDs and converted 100%.
Let me reiterate: PURE GEO (cityname) and MEANINGFUL TLD (com/net/org) advertised in the relevant city.
In one case, the city government itself actually bought the name and in another case, the advertising newspaper did :D
The only thing I did wrong was selling them in the first place. Definitely should've kept those
I have just arranged to advertise JesusChri.st in the CSMonitor (had a few hoops to jump through first though), but make sure you are advertising to the right market. Also watch the costs, they can seem small at first and suddenly they can escalate tremendously if the large papers are advertised in.
Good luck with the advertising, obviously hope it works, let us know the results.
Just like a generic keyword product domain converts into sales, targeted advertising cooking domains in cooking magazines, health domains in health magazines, business domains in business magazines/newspapers will also convert if the domains are decent, even if it doesn't produce a sale on the exact domains you have currently listed it will make those users aware of your website if running your own portfolio site which would be good to have before advertising as they may check back to see any future additions to your listings, some good opportunities for users that own the same categories of domains to team up and split the advertising costs and listings to gain a larger market share at a reduced cost, a general newspaper can work but if you can get the newspaper/magazine/website advertising to match the category of the domains you have you will achieve better results.
I've sold geo-targeted domains on Craigslist successfully. I would think a newspaper ad would work as well, if not better. At least when you use a local paper, you're sure to gets lots of potentially interested readers.
I'm not sure a general newspaper ad would work very well because:
- Paper readership is WAY down (OK, well at least here in the states it is).
- Papers are usually only "around" for a day or two before they end up in the recycle bin (being eco-optimistic here...) so exposure (vs. an online or magazine medium) is very limited. Plus, I'm not sure anyone actually goes looking for a domain name in a newspaper's classifieds. In my opinion, unless he runs a display ad in one of the main sections of the paper, there is minimal chance a potential buyer will find it.
If the dn(s) are good quality and his target is an end user, I'd recommend using a trade magazine or a trade newspaper where he might be able to reach an appropriate audience.
I recently saw someone advertising foodservice/restaurant oriented dn's in the back classifieds section of the Nations Restaurant News, a major restaurant industry weekly publication. That's why I say it pays to flip through any publication you come across, you never know what you'll learn or or what new ideas you'll come across.
In Canada you can advertise on the canwest global network of newspapers as they have newspapers in nearly every major canadian city and one of the canada-wide newspapers. Readership is down but still in the millions.
