I have a question regarding selling a domain name along with a website. What is the best way to do it? I build sites with DreamWeaver and Fireworks. Do I send the buyer the domain name, all files, and all html documents and they have to get their own hosting? Or do I simply provide the buyer with the domain name, all files, and access to the hosting account?

If any of you have sold a domain and website I would like to hear how best to do it. If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize.

I'd say sell the domain as you usually do and send the buyer a cd/dvd with all files by mail.
If it's a small website you could also make a couple of rar files and email them.
I never let anyone use my login info.
Hosting is something the new owner should arrange for him/her selve.

It depends by the website.
If it is a simple html site, you can just rar all the files and email to the buyer and eventually write him some howto for the installation (assuming they have their own hosting).
If it's a more complex site, including php, databases etc, sometimes the instructions can't be enough, and the best solution is to ask to the buyer to create an hosting account wherever they want, but then give you cPanel and ftp password, you upload the files, install everything and after of that the buyer will change the passwords. But it is possible only if the buyer knows you or trust in you.

However, you have a PM ;)

Another way is just sell the domain name or push the domain name if he/she has an account where the domain is registered. Or transfer the domain name under his authorization.
Also, provide the FTP control panel details along with other necessary login information.

The best way is to provide the authorization and login details for the domain name and hosting account. Transfer the ownership for both domain and hosting.

purchase a short term hosting service. upload everything to a server, have the domain point to the server. give the client all the login details and info.
a practical solution?

Think there is no one answer to this one. Often it will depend on the buyer. Most buyers will probably prefer to transfer to their own provider. I have brought a few small sites in the past and just received a zip file with the content. Larger sites with databases and customized scripts etc. can be a bit more complex to transfer.

Bottom line: ask the buyer what he/she prefers.
