To build up your own website, the first thing is to choose a domain name. A good domain name will contribute greatly to your website. What are the main considerations in choosing domain names and how to find a suitable domain name to your website? Let’s have a look at the following tips.

The Target of Your Website

Who will visit your website? If the target visitors are non-English speakers, a complex English word might not be suitable. The domain name shall be relevant to the content and style of your website. Consider visitors’ age, jobs and preference is also necessary.

The Extensions

Nowadays you will have a lot of choices in the extensions. In additional to .com and cc tlds, you can also choose new gtlds for your website. According to the content of your website, you can choose a unique extension for your domain name when you are not able to get a premium .com domain.

Be Memorable and Short

The number one rule in domain industry is that the shorter the better. Short domain names are easy to remember and more likely to get traffic flow. Thus short domain names regarded as premium domains are very expensive. A short domain name might even facilitate the marketing of the website.

The Key Word

Contain key word of your website in the domain name. What is the main business of your website? What do you want to present to your visitors? Figure out the key word and find a suitable domain name which can be highly matched in the search engine. Different search engines have different matching preferences. First study the most used search engine of your target visitors and then decide which language you shall use, English words, Chinese Pinyin or the Roma sound in Japanese. For example, when typing in a string of letters, Baidu.com, the most popular search engine in China will match it for the relative Pinyin firstly while Google will match it for English words. It will save you lots of energy and money on the Sedo ranking and advertising once you have chosen the right language.

Do not Change the Domain Name Easily

Once the domain name is decided, do not change it easily. The first mission of website marketing is to impress the visitors and acquaint them with the domain name. It takes time and efforts to achieve this goal. Besides, the domain name will be regarded as the brand of your website. Once changed, it will exert considerable influence on your business. Unless your brand name is upgraded and well-known to the public already, do not change your domain name easily.

Second-hand Domain Names

In the time that secondary domain name market is so active, it is common to build a domain name on a second-hand domain name. Even through, before you choose a second-hand domain name, please do a little research on its history. Whether it has been used as for an illegal website before? Or has it been put on the black list of search engine? The black spot on the domain name’s history might cause damage to your website, causing the website not accessible or blocked.

What was the resource about? :)

+1 for adding the second hand domains section last. That's sure to resonate with domainers here. ;) More end-users in the market = Good for NPers. :D
