Hi All, I purchased a domain on Sedo which had a set price but it looks like the seller may not transfer the domain to their servers to complete the process. On my end, I've agreed to all the terms and services and paid in full. Has anyone experienced this?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I’ve experienced this on multiple platforms. 50% of the time when this has happened, for me anyway, they never followed through. The other 50% of the time it simply took a long time.

Probably, the seller doesn't own this domain as of now.
Obsolete listing - in other words, there are tons of them on Sedo (tons are even available).

From the whois, it appears he changed the status to 'Redacted' to hide his identity - I already know who the owner is. I feel as though sedo's terms of service would offer enough documentation to make a legal claim against him. It's clear he's abusing their platform by not following through with the agreed-upon terms - I would think Sedo would support any action against someone who violates their core business model.

"Redacted" was set by Registry or Registrar according to GDPR law.

I had the same issue a few years ago. I found a nice domain, accepted the price, and paid. Then waited, and waited. Finally Sedo responded and said the seller made a mistake and forgot to add another zero to the end of the price and didn't want to sell it. I was really mad. I agreed to the terms and paid. Oh well.

Nowadays it is also possible that he died or on ventilator...

Did you get your money returned?

Even though account holders get reminders to go through their portfolios and keep things updated, as @Jurgen Wolf said, there are a lot of outdated listings.

You can contact your Transfer specialist and ask. They should follow up with the domain seller on your behalf.

So true, I had a streak last year where I had 3 purchases in a row all come back with, "We are sorry they don't own the name anymore." Good to see you back around Nadia hope you are well.

Hi this happens and for this reason I would not actually pay for a name on Sedo until the transfer specialist confirms that the owner can and will transfer it. You normally have seven days to pay after clicking the buy button.

You do get your money back from Sedo when this happens but you have to wait and if you wired the money they may try - not legally or morally ok - to charge you to send you your own money back.

Their ToS let them ban sellers who do not complete, and charge the failed seller the full amount of Sedo's lost commission - certainly giving Sedo the funds to cover any expenses you had, such as wire fees, currency exchange costs, and why not lost time too.

Of course anyone can report their experience on Trustpilot - there are some interesting comments on there about Sedo, not long ago they had a 1 star rating but now they ask some happy buyers of ok transactions to review them on Trustpilot, pushing up the ratings.

FYI - Sedo ToU are clear when it comes to listing a domain on their service. Refusing to sell a listed domain (one owns) is a violation. I'd be interested to see how this holds up in court.

(d) As a Seller of a Domain listed on the Domain Marketplace and/or Auction, you represent and warrant that: (i) you have registered, or have the exclusive right to register, the Domain with an appropriate Domain registrar or other registration authority; (ii) your registration rights to the Domain are current and not subject to deletion, cancellation, rescission, or deactivation by any applicable Domain registrar or other registration authority; (iii) you have not taken any action that would impair your ability or right to transfer the Domain registration right and no such action has been taken against you; (iv) the Domain has not been used in such a manner as to infringe the rights of any third party, including, but not limited to, trademark, naming or publicity rights; (v) the Domain is not the subject of any legal disputes or proceedings challenging your right to register or use the Domain; (vi) you will accurately describe the subject listing; (vii) you own and have the right to sell the content, if applicable, that you have included in your listing as part of your Domain; and (viii) if your offer to sell and transfer the Domain is accepted, you will complete the transaction with a ready, willing, and able Buyer. You will not, under any circumstances, list or transfer the rights to any Domain that you do not have sufficient rights to transfer, or that is illegal to transfer under applicable law.

I have experienced this on different platforms.

Few days ago, I got refund from Sedo for a 4L I had purchased. Listing was invalid, seller did not own the name anymore.

I have also bought nice names from Sedo without any issues.

Overall I would give them a positive review. I think it is up to Seller to manage their portfolio. It is also possible that a seller can 'decide not to transfer the name, Sedo cannot do anything.

Don't worry, you will either get the name or your money back.

Thanks, I'm sure I'll either get my money back or the domain - I just think people need to be more accountable for their actions.

Unfortunately, I also encountered the same problem. I contacted @Sedo, hoping that they could solve it properly and return my money as soon as possible. I don't know the result yet.
