Unstoppable Domains โ€” Expired Auctions

Hi All! :hi:

By request, we've decided to start a thread dedicated to Sedo. We're looking for invaluable insight into what domainers want and need out of our parking program (and marketplace, of course).

Questions, comments, suggestions, tips are welcome! We're hoping this will be a great discussion about what works at Sedo and what might not (please be constructive and respectful to others in your feedback) so that everyone involved can benefit and learn from it.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas! Happy Holidays!

Always,
Keith
(on behalf of Sedo)

are there any tricks in being successful on sedo? Must I buy premium listings ? Would it help?

I find just adding them and hopefully oneday they would go to auction just does not work for me. Thats why I sell all my domains offline.

Selling online might actually be fun.

You will get more visitors but donยดt think you will make sales if your names arenยดt good enough.
So be prepared to loose money.

So whats the secret? Low bidding amounts ?

stev0,

The secret is to own domains that people visit out of the blue. This is known as 'type in traffic'. For instance if your name is Steve, you might have visited the domains steve.com and steve.net. If you own a bike shop you might visit cheapbikes.com to check it out. You need to come up with domains, a visitor would type in to his browser for some reason.

Now imagine such a visitor opening a domain and there is a button that says "make offer" or "buy now". Some of those visitors would be interested enough to purchase the domain.

Domaining is a numbers game. If your domain gets 10 offer views a month, there is a high chance you will get multiple offers for this domain during the first year.

1. Login to sedo
2. click on "my sedo" and then "my domains"
3. change viewing option to "sales settings"
4. one of the columns that you see will be "offer views"

If your domain is parket at sedo, it means that many people have opened your domain and clicked on the "this domain might be for sale" link during the last 31 days.

There are a few million domains at sedo. I think it might be 7 million. Nobody is going to find your domain and make you an offer if your domain is low quality.

Now, I can hear you asking, "How am I going to find quality domains?" Good question. The best place to look is expired domain auctions.

This is exactly why I love this forum. No BS, say it how it is and help out where it needs be.

Thank you!

Exactly... There are millions of domains on sale at Sedo. Few people are going to browse through the inventory. In general an end user is interested in one particular domain, possibly he/she has a shortlist of suitable domains. The point is, if you have a quality domain, end users will find you and you don't have to chase them. For that reason there is no point in purchasing an enhanced listing or whatever just to stand out from the crowd, because low quality domains are not wanted.
People are complaining about the lack of visibility and being drowned in the mass of domains but that's not the crucial point.

The trick is to get domains that other people want, trying to anticipate their needs with never-before registered domains seldom works.

Type-in is the ultimate quality test, it means several people are having the same idea and thinking about the same domain.

I accidentally made an offer on a misspelled domain. I thought it was the correct spelling. Am I obligated to complete the purchase if the seller accepts??

Well, that would be right thing to do, after all, it was your mistake.

However, last time I accepted sedo offer for one of my mispelled domains (I also bought it by mistake, lol), sedo canceled the deal, saying "Buyer has gave out of the purchase, as he just saw its a typo" or something like that.

I dont find Sedo to be that great. Just my opinion. I cant sell anything on that site. And then the auctions are really stupid. You have to have your domain approved?! What is that?!?

I sold many domains through sedo in the last 6 years, and I find it a good service. If nobody wants to buy your domain, even with "This domain is for sale" (when parked with sedo) notification, its not sedo fault.

Monthly auctions are reserved for 'premium' domains and needs approval, yes. You can send your domains to auctions after you receive a bid.

Does sedo team even read this thread?

I had an offer on one of the domains, I submit counter offer with a note... the offer page says "under review" but the buyer makes another offer saying justify the price.

Now, did the buyer see the counter offer? If he did, shouldn't he see the figure as well as the note together rather than later when its posted? Seems really stupid to keep the note under review and release the counter offer figure.

This problem still exists... disappointing. Where is the "retarded" smiley when you need it?

I got an offer, I submitted counter offer and included custom note. The buyer SHOULD NOT get notification of NEW counter offer until the custom note is approved so s/he can make more reasonable and informed counter offer. As you can see in attached screenshot, the buyer made counter offer but did not read the note...so, whats the use?

Exactly... There are millions of domains on sale at Sedo. Few people are going to browse through the inventory.

there is an additional problem in there that exists for years: the search simply doesn't work. it sucks so badly that it gets funny.

try finding your domains on Sedo. I mean, try to simulate a user searching for domains similar to yours. for instance, you have "mother.com". try putting "mot", selecting extension ".com" and indicating
"start with" and see the results. go even to the category where you have the domain. the last time i check i could only find on domain of mine tipping all the words.

NOTE: never tested since the new look

tonecas

I see only a blank area on the auction pages of Sedo, (23 Feb 2011, 11.00 pm GMT). When I try to go to the marketplace or featured auctions, it diverts me to the Search area, so I cannot see any inventory at all.

I thought it was a problem with IE, so I tried Firefox and Chrome but no luck. What could be the possible reasons? Did I do something that Sedo didn't like?

They need to hire more Americans, open it up a little. I'm looking at the names they've picked for the Travel/Tourism auction and there is a pretty clear leaning.

New Guinness World Record at Sedo!
Sex.com Earns Official Title: "Most Expensive Internet Address Domain Name"
Sedo, the online domain specialist, today announced that its recent brokerage of Sex.com has earned the Guinness World Recordโ„ข for โ€œmost expensive internet address domain name.โ€ Sex.com was sold for $13 million on November 17, 2010.

Sedo, which celebrated its milestone 10-year anniversary on February 12, has grown to be a trusted advisor in the domain industry. As the worldโ€™s largest domain name marketplace, Sedo has brokered over $400 million worth of domain names including a number of high-profile, seven-figure transactions for premium domains such as Vodka.com, Pizza.com and Russia.com.

โ€œThe sale of Sex.com was truly a team effort. We spent about two years with the domain establishing the relationship, researching and finding the right buyer and managing the domainโ€™s transfer,โ€ said Kathy Nielsen, director of sales at Sedo. โ€œWeโ€™re honored that Sedo was trusted with such a high-value and high-profile sale, and weโ€™re ecstatic that it is now being recognized by Guinness World Records as a record-breaking price.โ€

โ€œWith a prominent sale like Sex.com, the domain transfer process can be incredibly complicated,โ€ said Jeremiah Johnston, chief operating officer and global counsel at Sedo. โ€œBut what makes Sedo unparalleled in the industry is that we work just as closely with domains of any size โ€“ to expedite and simplify the transaction, as well as eliminate unnecessary risks for both the seller and new owner.โ€

I am 100% sure this has been asked and answered but I coudl find it.. so sorry and THANK YOU in advance for your knowledge..

I JUST listed a domain on sedo today, pointed the parking there too...
I also put an asking price and a minimum bid.. asking $499. min $299.

If I email potential end users AND I sell the domain within a few days what will my sedo fees be?

I have heard that sedo charges a min $50 if the domain hasnt been there so long? is that true? or is that if it isnt parked there?

Thanks in advance!

25$ if you set 250$ fixed price and it points to sedo parking

its 50$ even if it sells for 250$ in negotiation.

So 10% if its park there and 20% with a $50 min if its not?

So 10% if its park there and 20% with a $50 min if its not?

You are close. It is %10 with no minimum if parked and fixed price.
It is %10 with min โ‚ฌ50, $50, ยฃ35 if both conditions are not met (fixed price and parked).

Sedo Price List
http://sedo.co.uk/uk/about-us/price-list/?tracked=&partnerid=&language=e

Here is what this means to you as the seller:
If you are selling a domain and the price is $500 or more, there is no disadvantage to forward the domain to its listing page regardless whether it is fixed price or not. In other words, I suggest that you forward your above $500 domains to their listing page which is this page:
http://www.sedo.com/search/details.php4?domain=example.com&partnerid=12354

Remember to change the partner id to your actual id. You will get a commission on your own sale. This wouldn't happen if you had parked the domain. Another advantage is that when you open the domain you see a button that says "buy now" or "make offer". Many potential buyers who open a domain and see a parked page, just close it down straight away.

Last week I received an offer 1 day later after I forwarded it to its sedo listing page.

Erdinc - your link goes to Sedo Brokerage.

I doubt Sedo intends to pay commissions on natural traffic to the domain, but if there is a way to have a big "buy this domain" button on the landing page I want it. The current template has a small type "this domain may be for sale" with out even a "click here". No body even sees it. Again the Sedo focus on parking and not sales - because sales remove parking opportunities.

Does Sedo read this thread?
They know it is here. I suggested to a rep that they come over and answer questions. There were one or two posts, then nothing - except PR puffs, of course. My guess is that it is nobody's job description, so there is nothing. A real short-sighted approach, but nobody is actually thinking in most corporations.

Hi Sedo People,

I need some advice on Sedo listings. I'm in the process of parking a group of 100 to 120 names on sedo for at least a year while I work on another project. But everyone has a different opinion about whether or not to set a price.

Currently I have all of them set on "$2800 negotiable" and have had a little success with that number (more like luck). My second option would be to set them all on "Make Offer."

I've read over and over and over that NOT setting a price was major taboo, but it seems like most of the sales that I'm seeing are coming from names posted with a simple "Make Offer."

So my choices are ...

"Make Offer" ------------------
or
"$2800 negotiable" -----------------

Your Vote or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Charles

Erdinc - your link goes to Sedo Brokerage.
Yes, because you didn't change example.com to your actual domain. Let's try this again:
Step 1: Copy this link to notepad:
http://www.sedo.com/search/details.php4?domain=example.com&partnerid=12345

Step 2: In the URL change example.com to your actual domain. Now we will replace &partnerid=12345 with your actual number.

Step 3: Inside sedo go to "sedo.com > my sedo > partner stats"
On to of that page it will say Your Partner ID: 12345.
If you don't see this you need to sign up for the partner program which is very easy and is free.
Copy that number. Go back to the notepad and replace your partner id.

Step 4: Set a fixed price for your domain.

Step 5: Forward your domain to that URL in the notepad.

Basically you are forwarding the domain to the page that opens when you click "this domain might be for sale" on the parking page and you are adding &partnerid=12345 to the end. This &partnerid=12345 works with any sedo link.

I doubt Sedo intends to pay commissions on natural traffic to the domain
Yes they do pay commission but it is not for traffic. It is for completed sales and you will get it if you follow the steps above.

if there is a way to have a big "buy this domain" button on the landing page I want it.
Again follow the steps above.

The current template has a small type "this domain may be for sale" with out even a "click here". No body even sees it.

You are absolutely right. That's why I don't park anymore.
