Today, I was searching for domains to hand reg. I was randomly searching for names then, I suddenly remembered an article published by marketwatch yesterday about home ownership by genarationz so I thought why not search and to my surprise generationz.com was available to register, I had previously as a novice had registered some seemingly gem of names only to find then to be worth nothing. So I went to the domain appraisal tool on godaddy and searched for previous sales and estimates they were in the five figure range. I went back to search only to find it to be taken. Please advise, It has happened to me previously too, only that I didn't care much.
Thanks

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
You are too quick with accusations and misleading headings.

Don't use GoDaddy to check if a name is available. In fact don't use any registrar. Use a whois tool.

whois data showing expiration date
does not mean it will expire on that day

it simply means "paid through" that day

owner has a lot of time beyond to renew and keep the domain

Much more likely two people had a bad idea at the same time.

Totally agree ..title is "
GoDaddy CAUGHT Front running domains. SCAM"

PURE CLICKBAIT TITLE with no legit proof at all!

This domain was first registered in 1996 and never dropped. Currently it is registered at Namecheap.

Not a scam IMO. Just a glitch perhaps. BTW I don't remember GD ever "front running" a name I've checked there in the past.

Most likely a glitch. I had this happen to me as well and just thought someone else had registered it.. but for some reason, the name register said it was available when it wasn't as I went to look again and it had been registered many years before.

it's called 'glitch' in their system. nothing new.
domain was available then searched again and it says not available.
always check whois if it has date of registered earlier than the day you searched on.
if it says available, check it on other domain registrar sites.

It was available because it was dropped then Godaddy scooped it up.

Why do you say that? Looks like it was renewed by the owner on 13 Feb 2018, before the expiry date.

You may want to to edit the thread title - you can.

Was it a closeout? i bought one in closeout but the domain never came to my account. Godaddy sent a refund. Too bad for me it was good name.

OP missed the fact that owner renewed the name, no scam/front running, just usual business, nothing to do with GD.

It wasn't a closeout, the name never went to expired auction

In your case, do you mind sharing the name? was it GD or not GD domain, because some names (like tucows) in closeout can still be renewed/transferred away.

what was the domain name?
It's still pending in my account, as soon as it's not, I can provide screenshots of everything.

And to clear up everything I said, it wasn't the fault or practice of godaddy, but my own lack of knowledge that caused my situation. I had no idea a domain could be unregistered and still be premium. Who decides that if whois says its unregistered?

I apologize.

Quick check showed that it was regged in 1996, are you sure?
