"Google" was an accident

I lost the link, but it's on digg right now; "Google" was an accident (look for a BBC video; the world as seen by Google)

When Larry Page and Sergey Brin were naming the company, they chose "Googol" (but didn't know its proper spelling) - when they announced it to staff, after filing paperwork & stuff, the staff made him aware of his (Larry's) error. Thus, it went through as "Google".

So, go figure. It was the last mistake he ever made....

So the question is, Would Google have ever been as sucessful if Larry Page had not made that error?

I believe so, Humdizzy.

They most likely would have marketed it the same way, and since the name is generic people would have learned to spell it just like the learned to spell "google.com".

Googol.com was registered april 13, 1995 i guess that's the primary reason :imho:

Actually it was "Goggle" and when the lawyer who was filing for incorporation the next day called them from her cellphone she understood Google.

In addition for those that don't know the reason behing the simplistic GUI of Google was the fact neither Larry or Sergey actually knew HTML :) lots of stories to tell you about GOOG my ex still works there and she was hired pre-ipo

People say Google Sounds way better, but i think everyone would have got used to it the other way, if it was the other way.

If you'd watch that video (find it first) on BBC, LARRY PAGE (or Sergey, I forget) himself explains that what I originally posted was what really happened.

You can't say such a remark without giving sources and proof :|

It is true. I like the way Google works though. It is plain, yet nice. Yahoo! seems to throw everything in your face. It is way over the top.
