Safe way to search for domain name availability

Having come across many threads & experiences on registrars using the domain search logs & then regging those domains, not really sure whom to blame! Is it the registrar that sells / uses the search logs or people take search logs from ICANN themselves?

Anyway.. This is the way I use to search for domain name availability in ANY extension. I've found this to be safe so far...

1. go to dnsstuff.com
2. under dns lookup, enter the domain with extension (somthing.com) and press enter

If the system returns "No A records found" from the REGISTRY (From some root servers)

Good trick. But it's not efficient if you have bulks to check.
