Safe whois lookup?

I've read the various threads regarding people who use some companiy's whois lookup and than wash some dishes and than return to find the domain is taken.

Based on the various posts I'm thinking some companies are having "issues" with their whois files.

Wondering if people have a found a "safe" whois source. Also which ones to avoid.
