Where do you search for domain availability ?

I use DomainTyper.com for searching available domain names. The simple interface is appealing to me :)

Hello,

First of all,i check the domain name via "whois" command on my linux operating system.
Then i prefer using godaddy.com or name.com for verification.
Name.com has an easy and good interface for querying multiple domain name extensions.

I search at Name.com. Used to be GoDaddy.com many years ago, then Moniker, now Name.com

I just checked Name.com. The interface is good, but the site is too slow to load in my stupid net connection. The background image there just makes the site slower for me :( If a page take that much time to load, I might even forget the domain name in my mind :P

Can you please try the "Search multiple domain names" section below the domain name search text box?
Faster interface i've typed about will come.

I prefer safe searches, rather than searching at registrars; registrars do not keep private the names you search, there are many threads about this here at Namepros.
For quick real-time lookups that are safe, I usually use saferwhois.com. For bulk lookups that are safe I use DNAZ (Domain Name AnalyZer) by iDotz.net. This one you have to download to your computer, and takes a few mins to learn the use, but it's very handy.
Usually I stick to saferwhois though.

The problem with searching a name with a registrar is that you can search a term you like; if it's available, usually you want to think on it for a few hours or a day or two, do some more research on it... and then you return to reg it... and find it's been suddenly regged, often only an hour or two after you did your search. This is common and it's because registrars don't keep your searches secure or private. As I said, there are many threads about this in Namepros' history.

Bulk?

Ah, great thread... Was excited to see SaferWhoIs but you can only enter one domain at a time. :(

Are there any safe bulk domain search sites?

(I see the Bulkazoid ad at the top of this page, but it appears to be only for uploading CSV files, which I don't use.)

I just use Domain Tools to run a series of keywords through their advanced search.

I prefer dynadot.com and godaddy.com search results are accurate.

In my experience Name.com bulk searches are not accurate.

but name.com who.is is good.

What "(on-hold (redemption period))" on whois means?
And how much could it last?

I use DomainTools.

Never had a problem.

If I search at a registrar, that means I plan to reg the name immediately.

Pablo, if the name does not go to a pre-release auction at Namejet or Snapnames, it will drop from the registry on day 75 or 76 after the expiration date. Even if the year says "2012," it still could be in expiration because registrars are allowed to renew domains for a short period of time and then get a refund if the name doesn't garner interest.

Dear pabloEscobar,

on-hold means the domain name was placed on hold by the registrar and cannot be used or renewed.

The redemption period is domain registry period of up to 30 days that occurs when a domain name is deleted after having expired not renewed. Instead of getting deleted and returning to the domain names available for registration, the existing registry keeps a hold on the domain name in a what is technically called as REDEMPTION PERIOD. During this 30-day redemption period, the original domain registrant (owner of the domain) is allowed to retrieve the domain name from deletion by contacting their Registrar. This process costs an additional fee.

This extra 30-day period - redemption period - extends the time available to renew expired domain names by 30 days. However, all names that enter the redemption period are removed from the zone files in the global DNS, as a result, any Web site or email services associated with the domain name gone into redemption period will stop working and would appear offline.

After the 30-day redemption period there is a 5-day Pending Delete Phase. When a domain is in Pending Delete Phase, no one is allowed to renew the domain and it cannot be yet registered because its still not returned to the public domains. After the 5-day Pending Delete Phase the Registry will release the domain back into the public of available domain names enabling fresh registration.

n topic;

I use iwhois.com for all my searches. I'd never use Godaddy to check a domain unless I was ready to buy immediately.
