Renewing a domain name helping its sale

This has happened to me quite a few times to the point where I don't think it's necessarily coincidence. I've renewed a domain name, and then within weeks, it sells. I think to myself, dang it, if I had only waited a couple more weeks.

But then I wonder if renewing the domain name indirectly helped the sale. Maybe buyers (most of the time end users) are waiting to see if it will drop. Once it's renewed, maybe they are more inspired to purchase at that point rather than wait another year for it to drop.

Anyone else have this experience?

Complaining about 10 bucks when you are earning 100s or even 1000s? :)

Well, your guess might be right. Some people might be lurking around to see if it drops.
There are domainers who let their domains enter into deletion period so that they garner attention through multiple drop-catch platforms such as namejet. I have been trying to participate in a particular 'about-to-be dropped' domain at namejet. That damn domain gets renewed just before it is completely available at namejet, every damn year!!

chenzen has a point...

if a renewal fee is enough to cause a fuss in your finances even after a sale, then you need to think about your domaining activities - perhaps a new strategy, setting higher prices, reducing the size of your portfolio, etc.

But yes generally, I get more offers on domains that I have registered for a longer term. My "keepers" have multiple years on them.

For domains I don't really care to keep for the long run, I take it year by year...

So yes, people do keep their eyes on domains, hoping they will expire. I know, personally when I see a domain that interests me, that is parked or owned by a domainer, I'm willing to wait to see what happens at expiry.

.

More of an observation and connecting the dots than anything. Not really meant to be a complaint. Meh.

have seen inquiries right after renewal and even on just changing parking company a few times

Most people want to transfer to a different registrar when they buy a domain which can be a hassle. Renewing it removes another hassle

Well, an expiring domain will still have to go through:

1) Registrar-sponsored auction

2) Filling possible backorder

3) Andrew Reberry

So waiting for a domain to expire (if you are a buyer), "may" not necessarily be a great idea.
