The police department in Bluff City, Tenn., let the rights to its website expire. The site was bought by a man who is the department's worst nightmare. Brian McCrary received a $90 speeding ticket this year. Now that he controls the website, he's been posting articles criticizing the department.

Yet another instance of someone forgetting to renew their domain, allowing someone who received a ticket from this police department to snatch it up. Have you checked yours lately?

Well, the cops are a commercial entity, you know, with all the fines they hand out to raise revenue...

A lot of state and county addresses are grotesque series of dots and abbreviations that are wholly unmemorable to the public, which is what's likely to be allocated to any given PD.

A .gov costs $125 a year, a .com/org $9 retail- no aggravation to register a .com or a .org, a lot to register a .gov.
I can totally see how offices populated with 'non tech' people just say F-it, give me the $9 .com and be done.
