What’s the difference between a Domain Name Registrar and a Domain Name Registry?
The two most common types of organisation in our industry are Domain Name Registrars and Domain Name Registries.
A Domain Name Registrar, like us, is an organisation which helps users to register their domain names.
A Domain Name Registry, like Verisign, is an organisation that holds the database of all registered domain names in a certain Top Level Domain (TLD) such as .com. They also hold the root zones which convert domain names into IP Addresses.
The relationship between registrars and registries ensures that everyone has fair access to different domain name extensions and that there is competition in the registrar market.
In order for a domain registrar to be able to offer the domain name that a certain registry operates, they must have a registry accreditation. They must also be accredited by ICANN, the governing body of the domain name industry. These accreditations ensure that the registrar is capable, both technically and financially, of offering the given top level domain to customers.
Registries on the other hand have a contract with ICANN to operate a certain Top Level Domain. The process of becoming a registry is extremely difficult. It can often take years for a new TLD to be offered, or for the operation of a TLD to change hands.
Domain Name Registries also set the policies that govern how registrars can offer domain names. This may relate to who can register the domain name, the maximum period of registration, the minimum number of characters in a domain name or what DNS configuration can be used against the domains.
Registrars do not make these policy decisions, but are heavily involved in enforcing and maintaining these policies among registrants.
