You guys seem to be the only ones who have anything good to say about registerfly.com on any webhosting/internet type message boards (perhaps this site is affiliated with them).

I feel guilty I did not further research this company more before jeapordizing my wife's domains. Now I see they have terrible reviews everywhere but here. Since Kevin on The Screen Savers recommended them, I assumed they were legit and didn't do any research. Their website seems quite professional as well.

My wife has a column in the paper here, and they have started making it a personal column with many pictures of herself in the first-person stories. She has started to get a few weird emails, and I realize that this stupid public whois data system is an atrocity if some real weirdo ever wants to track her down. I consider getting a PO Box for the domain name, but really don't want the hassle or expense. Mail forwarding services are too expensive. So then I wonder if there is any sort of whois protection out there. I find a show transcript from The Screen Savers where Kevin says he uses protectfly. This is PERFECT! This is exactly what we need. I trust Kevin's word too much.

So to test the company, first I register a couple of domains I would want for my own blog's name (and don't want my own address on the whois for that either). Things seem fine, the protection works. So then I begin the process of transferring my wife's personal site and the domain names related to her column title (which just frame her column in the newspaper for now). I have to unlock them at a tucows registrar, process all the emails and finally get them transferred and the whois protected (a major pain). Now we are not completely off the public record yet -- the nameservers still belong to us (we use a couple of virtual servers). So I need to move the nameservers as well. Since everything seems great and I have 30 or so domains (including two used as nameservers) at a tucows registrar, I know it will be a long process to respond to all those emails and unlock them one at time. I plan to do this over a couple of weeks. I see that I can add a big chunk of credit to the account with one charge so I don't have to run 30 odd small charges to my credit card. I know I will be spending a lot to transfer so I add $200. No problem right?

The next day I get a very generic fraud email warning in my junk email, which I at first assume is another paypal phishing scheme. Then I see registerfly's email address. Mind you this is a very generic, very phishy email asking me to fax my entire credit card statement. I at first thought it was phishing scam, instigated in the hour or so the domain was unprotected at registerfly.com. I called my credit card company and they said everything was fine, no one had contacted them. I asked them what to do as I did not want to fax my credit card statement to some yahoo with no real proof of his identity. They gave me a number to give them, and to have them call. My credit card company verified all my address and personal information was correct (and hadn't changed recently as it should be). I did log on to registerfly.com to verify it wasn't a phish.

Mind you also, registerfly not only suspended the account, they are threatening to seize them within 24-hours.

So I emailed them back telling them to call my credit card company or me. They are making threats, not me. Does the so-called "fraud" department call me? No. Do they call the credit card company? No. Do they respond to the email? No. What a great company! With their 24-hour threat looming, and still no response (have a mentioned what a great company this is?), I black out all but the last four digits of my credit card on the statement and fax it too them. Still no response.

Just actually how suspicious is this account, hmm...let's see:

-- No free account email address was used.

-- *Southern California* billing address

-- transferred/paid/etc with *Southern California* IP address (socal.rr.com)

-- *Southern California* phone number

-- Two of the domains forward to my wife's column which is obviously in a major *Southern California* newspaper. The column name is the same as the domain name. Hmmm....perhaps a *PUBLIC* figure might actually want to use a private whois service. You think?

WOW! What a crack fraud team they must have at registerfly. Great job guys!

Mind you, had they called or resolved the issue in a timely manner, I wouldn't have minded. Hell, just respond to the email with 12-hours would be nice.

So congratulations to registerfly on sucking it up big time and messing with a technology reporter at major newspaper (which a simple visit to the transferred domains would have made obvious, perhaps even a phone call?)

Further, theflypaper.com says "Remember, transferring your domain to RegisterFly is RISK-FREE!". I bet a lawyer can get their ass in a sling for saying that and behaving like they have with ZERO response or contact. I'm glad to see they are a US company. So US laws can hold them accountable.

So have any of you guys dealt with these morons? Some of you must since you're the only forum in the universe that speaks highly of them.

What authorities can I contact? Any real humans out there affiliated with this company?

It doesn't matter if they made a mistake, their inability to correct it or deal with me is the real issue. Nothing from this company, nothing.

Thanks for your time. It's sad the company sucks, seemed like such a good idea.

Any associated business based in California?

Everyone has their own opinions, I've never talked them up besides giving them 2 thumbs up for no longer offering new.net names. Their support staff has never been upto par IMHO.

Try sending a Private Message to NP member regfly. He is with RegisterFly.com Customer Service, and might be able to help you.

If you search this forum for "registerfly", you'll see both critics and fans of registerfly. Recently I've seen more of the former.

Does anyone have "Jason Quinn" of RegisterFly.com email or contact? He seems to handle PR for them. Perhaps he might understand the ramifications of stealing a journalist's personal site as well as the domain of her column title.

FauxCaster

I just PM'd you a request for more info. I think the issue of putting $200.00 in a brand new account is what set off the red flag with our risk dept. They are very particular in verifying all transactions to ensure they are legit.

Please respond to my PM and we can get this taken care of for you.

What's wrong?

I have used them for two years and I think aside from offering those ridiculous, new.netโ€™s they have been very professional.

A good deal more professional and reliable than some of the other upper mid-range registrars.

Well, first of all, that's not true. There are plenty of happy RegisterFly customers spread around every forum that I visit. Secondly, it's an insult to NamePros to suggest that this site is only allowing positive comments about them because of a connection or affiliation. Not to mention it's completely false.

It's unfortunate that you have experienced such difficulties, and I truly wish you good luck in getting things resolved. However, I think if you calm down and stop slinging mud at everybody else, you will have a much better chance of getting to the bottom of the situation.

No offense. Good luck sir!

I've had both good and bad experiences at registerfly. For the most part, they have taken care of them after i've gotten past the first or second level of support to someone who actually has some authority and knowledge. It's almost like calling a big executive and having secretaries screen the calls.

I do have to say they have the best control panel interface in the industry (but with the occassional bug), and there is no easier place to push a domain to a new owner since you can simpley push it to an email address. In bulk, the prices are somewhat competetive as well, particularly with the frequent specials.

Currently, they are a reseller of enom, but they have announced becoming ICANN accredited on their own. I have more domains there than anywhere, but also have a good number at Enom, Dotster, Fabulous, and Godaddy.

I had major problems with them in the beginning, too. I was convinced they were some sort of fraud or scam. I kicked myself for not researching them first.

Anyhow, I did like you- in a panic, I found this forum in a search engine and asked all my questions about registerfly.

I was also surprised to hear everyone say only good things about them.

The user here, regfly, helped me out right away- he took care of it and I'm happy to say that I have had not a single problem since.

I'm now convinced that registerfly is legitimate and quite good- up until now, that is. We'll see how the next 5 months go. But I'll most definitely stay with them if this good service keeps up.

I hate to see this thread brought back to life, because the thread title looks so ominous. The poster's problem was solved by a regfly employee that stepped forward here at the forum quickly, and with courtesy. It just gives me the creeps to see "fraud/scam site" posted as the title, at the top of a thread regarding a company that is solid and well respected over all.

Probably just me being too sensitive. I'm like that sometimes. :red:

I've moved 100+ names to them recently, and after some initial snags w/ transfers and PayPal (resolved), I have had a very smooth run with them. They are hot and cold w/ email turnaround time, but they do have live chat support which helped me once and, at least, got me pointed in the right direction, if not getting definitive answers. Also feel they are legit and above board, they have a nice interface and great promos. As long as everything remains smooth, I 'll continue renewing names w/ them and continue adding to my account..

Have a resellers acct at eNom, so am making that my major registrar and will continue keeping a fair number at GoDaddy, which was the first registrar that I regged any quantity w/. My first registrar was Register.com, but that's a whole other topic.
