Reg expired domains

So as a newbie, I understand I probably stepped into a no-no zone hand-reg some expired domains with only a handful or so months of being introduced to domaining. Wasn't a huge fee to reg so if they flop, lesson learned, but I am curious why these couple names (ex, isweedgood.com) would be overlooked? I know it's not a big winner domain but as any new domainer, feel like it is a solid name that can bring some ROI - this does cause some draw-back in my mind that if I was able to hand reg it, it is not worth anything? Is it a red flag if I notice a name that has expired and no one has backordered or hand reg? Only real reason I can figure is that the big dogs may be looking for domain names that will bring $xxxx or more while this domain and others are more $xxx if that...

Hopefully others with way more experience than me will answer your query, @Sara Huffman , but my simple answer would be that to some degree desirability is in the eye of the beholder. I see in each Namebio daily report, down in the $100 to $200 range, many domains that to me are next to worthless, yet someone else clearly saw value in them.

Anyway, to get to your question of the specific domain name isweedgood.com. Here is my take on it: .com (good), 3 words (OK but not ideal), overall length (OK to good); easy to remember and spell (Yes); currently topical (Yes). But then what is in my opinion the really important question - WHO would want to buy it? I don't always do this but I see huge value before one buys a domain to make a little list of who might be interested in the domain, and how unique it is for that audience. I have difficulty seeing what sort of company would really use this domain, but I don't know the industry at all. Anyway, in my mind that is the question.

I would check out GoValue from GoDaddy and Estibot to get an idea of what they think. My one free Estibot of the day is used up, but for GoValue they give a worth of $847 on your domain which is encouraging (although I have found that they make almost any reasonable length .com many hundreds to a bit more than a thousand).

Best of luck with all of your domain names, @Sara Huffman . What places are you planning to list it?

Bob

I honestly take the govalue with a grain of salt...when I see enough $2 bargins with values of 1K, I kind of don't know whether to trust it but appreciate that they placed some value on it :/

Personally, picked it as it is a hot topic, but not really high ranking as I see it more as a blog site for an advocate, so definitely low xxx imho is what I'm thinking it would pull from even an end user
