Redirecting in ones own site, affect SEO?

simple redirecting of index to forum/index

ex. http://www.filmmusicforum.com or http://www.bigloveforum.com

Will this affect the way Google and other search engines rank my site? Does it matter if my index is just a direct to another page on the domain?

Dumb question, but I just don't know the answer!!

it would be better to have the forum in your root folder rather than redirecting to /forum
