Hi guys

I was just after a quick bit of info to see what everyone did in this type of situation thanks. I have found a couple of free .com domain names where other lesser extensions are taken. from what i have learnt this would represent a good sales opportunity as , in theory, you could pick up the .com to sell to whoever owns the other extensions. but.....do you buy the .com name first before seeing if they're interested (taking the chance they aren't and you have a name that is of no interest to anyone else & unsellable) or contact them before registering it yourself (thus protecting you from wasting time/money if they don't want to buy it off you)? if you contact them first how do you word it so you're not lying about owning it already but avoid alerting them that they could just go & reg it themselves?

thanks for that

Buy the domains if they would make a good brand not because other people own the other extensions. Also try not to bargain on the owners of the other extensions buying it, because if they don't and theres every chance they won't - you'll be stuck with some crap name.

I wouldn't ever offer a name for sale to someone if the name wasn't in my possession either.

Hope this helps :)

thanks for the reply - is good to get other ppls thoughts on it thanks. i wouldn't normally myself but was worried about being stuck with the name if they weren't interested. or being honest about not owning it & them saying thanks and picking it up direct themselves. but as you note above maybe its just not a good strategy to buy names purely on the basis in my OP thanks

This typically isn't the best way to go about marketing names in the hopes that the lesser known extension registrant will want the .com, if you believe it is a name that will still have value to others besides the lesser known extension registrant then you could take that chance if you have a plan B. Just my advice. Just make sure the domain isn't using any trademarks.
