Hello,

I have a question for the .tv folk. What is the value of city-name .tv domains? I fould the .tv name for my hometown, which is a medium-sized city. What would be the resell value for names like this? I'm new to tv, but if I get this name, I have tons of ideas for development. I'll list the name here when the sale is done. If you really want to know the name, PM me.

Thanks alot,

Seanboy

You ask a difficult question. Understandably, you want to keep the name of your city secret while you deliberate the purchase. Some things to consider are the size of the city, disposable income of those citizens, and advertiser potential. Its incredibly difficult to estimate even if we knew what city and how many citizens. I would say a rough guess would be 10-20,XXX in the next few years without any development if the trends continue. Otherwise, definitely a X,XXX amount.

Not sure whether you will find this helpful or not but it complete conjecture based on what I know and my approach to names.

To SiliconFinance: Do you really feel that City name tv'swith medium sized population but decent income & industry will be worth around $10 - 20 xxx in the near future?

The reason i am slightly surprised at this is due to fact i have found around 10 cities that fullfill all they credentials (all with well over 100,000 population, with decent tourist industry and high employment) and more but decided not to reg as i felt i was buying too many .tv's that might never get developed or be sold on.

Please dont feel i am doubting your comment Silicone as you are much more experienced and qualified that me to answer such questions, i have only been involved with .tv's for a very short time and really have no idea on reseller prices.

I have thought from 1st moment i seen Geo .tv's mentioned in this forum that they could be good buys but i had no idea anyone felt they could reach such high fees within a few Yr.

Off-topic: Nice to see that you believe in WHDMI :hehe:

Back to topic:

I you plan to develop it, and the size of your city isn't important,
it could be difficult to find "your city-oriented" video content.

Otherwise, I think it is a good idea...

WHDMI?

If you know you can develop the domain and provide a local presence then it is a good reg. Hard to place any resale value due to the fact that many GEO.tv are available for reg in the $500 to $1000 range and no sales data on GEO.tv in the secondary market

I have passed up a number of Geos in past month due to the fact i knew i wouldnt have time to develop them Silicones comments on their possible long term value is making me have a 2nd though about maybe buying them for a speculative punt for a few yrs.

Im not sure though as i think i am catching that terrible addiction thats going round where you cant stop buying .tv's :'(
I have said about 5 times over this month that "this domains is my last" but keep going back 4 more!!

LOL...you're silly man :)

But seriously, thanks for all of the comments. I have some ideas for the site. I honestly haven't paid much attention to .tv until lately when I read an article about ChannelMe.tv, and another article about that Verisign deal. I think with the recent advances in streaming video that .tv may not be such a bad investment, but man these reg fees are expensive! I'm not sure how many I'll buy since i'm working on a limited budget.

Thanks again,

Seanboy

Near future to me is 2-5 years. What something is worth is what someone is willing to pay for it. As major geographical dot tv names are developed and people outside those geographical regions learn about them, then I assume they would expect to find a similar site tailored to their geographical region. For example, suppose the first major regional site to be developed (if it has not already been developed) is NewYork.TV.

Suppose I am in Los Angeles, my first move would be to check out NewYork.TV then check out LosAngeles.TV. Of course, the same might be true for NY.TV and LA.TV.

Therefore, when I say near future and my estimated time frame, I am completely speculating, but I am willing to bet in less than two years we will begin to see developed geo sites.

If a developed geo site generates 2-3K in a month in net income, which is perfectly capable and not unlikely, then I believe asking 10K plus right now is a minimum price I would ask from a buyer who intends to profit by developing the site. The last thing I would do is sell it to another speculator. Chances are that they will not value it as high as someone who intends to develop the site.

The factors I would recommend sizing up are whether it is a premium name, whether the city is spread out like LA or more vertical like NY, and whether there are a lot of opportunities to sell advertising.

This is one aspect of the consulting I have done in the past, but without getting into further specifics the most important ability is the ability to size up the opportunity. That may require some practical experience but a lot of business judgment, which is not discussed as much on these forums.
