Hey guys, newbie here.

I have recently starting expanding my domain name portfolio. I hear people always talk about one word domain names (.com)

Why are they so valuable? Does the word have to be very common?

If I registered a one word domain name, how do i determine its relative worth?

For example, one i tried searching for is tormentress .com - its not a very common name, but its one word. Would it be worth much? I found a one word domain (7 letters) and trying to see if its worth anything but not sure how to determine their value

Also, does it matter much if the word has a suffix?

Thanks so much for the help/advice

One word .com domains are definitely very valuable but they really have to be common and well known. There are some ways to know if a domain name has value whether is a one word or two word .com. I will use tormentress .com as an example and analyze it based on the factors/tools I go by.

#1 Zfbot.com (Very Important Factor - Min of 20 related sites)

This tool tells me the amount of other websites have the domain keyword in them. Meaning these are targeted end users you can reach out to in order to sell the domain name. For tormentress .com there was only 1 related site which is the .net version of it. So far the domain has very slim value.

#2 Google Keyword Planner/Tool (1000 Searches Min, If Less Then Must Have More Related Sites)

Monthly searches are very important since this shows how popular the domain keyword is to other people. The more people are familiar with a term an the more monthly searches it has the more valuable it is. The term tormentress had 110 searches a month meaning again slim value.

To give you an even better picture take the domain walking .com it has 10,000 plus related sites and it has 110,000 monthly searches. This domain has You get the idea now?

So basically that one word domain has very slim value due to the above factors. Of course there are other factors like the pronunciation of it, CPC, how many advertisers are there on Google adwords for the keyword term. But since it has low searches and no related sites it really does not matter.

Does the keyword have commercial value - what type of business could someone operate using this domain ? - with an online business being preferable (i.e. restaurants may not care much about a domain because customers do not experience the product online - though they might grab a coupon)..

A random word even in .COM is not ideal though potentially it could be considered brandable such as animal names (jaguar, lion, cheetah, shark, eagle, tiger)
