Preregister a new Domain Extension

I'm hoping to pre-register a new domain but most of the 'One Word' domains are highly priced but there are some one word domains that are available for reg fee.

Why is that? Is it because those one word domains are not worth much and silly to invest into?

Or if its the right one word is there potential in them?

Also, how do GoDaddy decide how much a word is worth? How is the list compiled?
