Have I understood this correctly -> it goes like this:

If domain is "worthless" by itself I should develope it and the purpose of developing is to gain popularity = traffic = $$$ ?

So the more popular and therefore more trafficed my developed site is, the more value it has in a resell market but NOT if I only have a good idea and content slammed there, but no traffic?

So it's like developing is HARD WORK :)

Yes developing is hard work.
Developing can make you an INSTANT BILLIONAIRE !!! Seriously It can.
Example is myspace.com, and all the other web2.0 sites that google or yahoo has bought over recently.

So it all depends on what are you developing ?
Are you gonna develop some blog/ mini-site like most of us ? or are you gonna develop something so cool like youtube.com ?

My advice ? If you have time and money, Think Big like Donald.

I don't personally agree with the development of poor quality domain names. Sure, it might add some value to your otherwise worthless name, but imho, most people would be better off looking where they went wrong (along the path towards registering this name) and spending time learning about what makes a name worth it's price.

I have to agree with Reece here. If you are going to develop a website it is best to have a name the is very generic so people know where to go. These names can be made up words like Google or Yahoo or Digg but they are all easy to remember. You want a name that is easy to remember and if you are talking with a friend you can say the name and they will then easily be able to remember and get to the name later.

sometimes all you need is the time to make the money. From there innovation is the key. THINK BIG

Developing is not just about making it attractive to buyers, of course. If the site becomes popular you can make money through advertising, affiliate links, etc. But the bottom line is that it's hard work. Professional domainers typically do limited development of only their best names, while the rest are parked, whether with a parking service or a customized solution. "Pure" domainers don't develop at all, but I believe there is great value in developing a good generic domain name, both to you and to the reader/consumer.

If you develop and market sites, you can earn a regular income even if you do not do any work for a few weeks or months. For domains (unless you have very good domains with type in traffic for parking revenue), you have to be more involved in buying and selling.

Development = bringing traffic = traffic / ppc = revenue
Development = good content = good backlinks = good PR = good traffic = revenue

I take it this way.. a little equilibrium which is made correctly can lead to revenue in every way. So focus on that.

Revenue achieved? = working on more traffic and more revenue.

I think "My very little opinion" the domain name has nothing to do with that. If it's good it will receive traffic. if it's bad it will receive traffic. The difference is that better domains receive natural traffic which is extra, easy to remember..and expand at faster pace.

When I think about the value of development vs domain values, I think back to the success of Andrew Miller and Michael Zapolin of Internet Realestate group. What better example is there than that? If you don't know about some of their achievements, I would suggest Googling them.

Development is hard, but I believe well worth the effort if you own the right kind of domains. I'm spending most of my time now learning website development. No question it is worth the hassle!
