Once the us government cedes control of the Internet can we expect steep increases in registration prices?
By the Associated Press | November 30, 2012 | 6:34 PM EST
NEW YORK (AP) — The federal government has cleared VeriSign Inc. to manage the databases that house ".com" domain names for another six years, but the company won't be allowed to raise prices without approval.

Under the current contract, which expires Friday, VeriSign was guaranteed four price increases of up to 7 percent each on domain name registrations. VeriSign sought a similar guarantee as part of the contract renewal, but the Commerce Department rejected it. The new contract freezes the annual price at the current $7.85 per name, barring special circumstances.

The US Government will not cede control of the internet, leaving Russia & China to take control with their interventionist policies, hundreds of times worse than the very limited intervention which the US has done.

"Despite those efforts, however, the plan is expected to pass."

Last month, Senator Marco Rubio was behind a letter, signed by a small number of other Congressmen, that asked the NTIA todelay the transition until the changes proposed in the plan could be tested out.

And Congressmen have, for the third time, included a rider in a must-pass finance bill that would prevent the NTIA from using any funds to aid the transition.

Despite those efforts, however, the plan is expected to pass.

It needs to pass the House, Senate, President. I doubt it will pass the House.

Either way I hope registrants rights are not negatively affected. I'd Hate to be as helpless as those new gtld registrants who's rights are severely limited by their respective registry owners.

Better to late the US Government have some control than let ICANN run itself.
