.com Domain Renewal Price Increases

Just wanted to make the point that with the current state of the economy, it was the wrong time for Verisign to increase their .com renewal prices..The increase may not be big for holders of small number of domains but its a completely different ball game for large domain holders..Wrong move at the wrong time in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see how much .com renewals have dropped this year...caused by dropping ppc income, higher renewal prices and not to mention competition from growing strength of ccTLDs

I don't think VeriSign cares about us domainers one iota. Despite how many .coms us domainers own collectively, it really is only a fraction of the total number registered. Plenty of businesses are perfectly happy paying $35/year at NetSol -- other than domainers, I don't think most people will mind (or even notice) the increase.

We have had increases every year atleast for the last 2 years. I believe there is one coming again in Sept/Oct., don't know for sure.

I would imagine a substantial year over year drop in renewal rates...

last year the PR from VeriSign about the increase was at the end of March
(VeriSign PR 27/03/08)

the year before it was on the beginning of April
(VeriSign PR 05/04/07)

it is now the end of April and there has been no PR (just checked , you can also check here , March 2009 , April 2009) ... so probably VeriSign decided to not raise the prices this year (the economic climate logically also played a role in this decision)

note: according to the contract with ICANN , VeriSign can raise the prices in the 4 out of the 6 years of the contract for up to 7% , unless there are security issues , in which case it can raise it for all 6 years

(VeriSign did raise the prices for the first year (on 15/10/07) and for the second year (on 01/10/08) of the contract)

Good info Earthian...I would imagine it played a role. Will have to check the quarterly domain industry report from Verisign for the year over year drop in renewals...

It is always the right time for Verisign to increase prices! Remember it is a monopoly, it isn't like people will shop elsewhere. The increased number of drop names due to the price rise would be a small fraction of the overall revenue increase in my view.
