Apparently you can now pre-order domains for all of these extensions below:
Quintaris and Pool.com Present New TLD Pre-Orders

Am I the only one annoyed by all of these soon-to-be created extensions?

Huge waste of money. I think even the registries will have a hard time turning a profit. They didn't draw lessons from past experiences ie .aero .travel .coop .museum etc

I am new to domaining and I know plenty of people who surf the net.I have asked them about new ttld's and their answers are almost identical. That is when they see a title that looks different from all they have seen before they see it as some form of spam/virus/ and stay well clear from even clicking it. Hardly anyone outside of domaining knows about new ttld's and every other person gets fearful, wary of these.Makes sense to me If I had not been a domainer I would have felt the same. They are a complete waste of time and money.

Geez

There goes the value of some of my .com names.

Creation of all these extensions are not good for .com. People and companies will have more and more options to choose from and may not see the need to pay big bucks for some .com.

I would not worry Steven. You cannot place a price on brand and .com is no1
Any company worth its salt will always go for the .com, not some substandard ttld.

Quintaris and Pool.com Present New TLD Pre-Orders

The listed TLDs don't exist, and if one reads the Quintaris page Quintaris » Stake your Claim to the Internet’s Newest Addresses carefully, they acknowledge that most, if not all, of the TLDs they're taking orders for may not even be applied for, let alone granted. They further state that their pre-ordering data will be used to support the "proof of concept" of the selection and addition of such new TLDs.

Bottom line is they're taking pre-orders (supposedly are risk-free, though I've not read all the fine print on that, since I don't use Pool) for TLDs that don't exist, and may never exist*.

* even if a TLD, such as say .FREE, was created, there's no guarantee that the TLD operator would take orders from anyone. They could choose to only license domains to various select retailers, etc and not domainers at-large. Or even more extreme, such as with the hypothetical TLD .REALTORS, only permit registrations by licensed realtors.

I wouldn't be surprised if the roll-out takes years, assuming it happens at all. Most likely only a few new, probably mostly useless, TLDs will be created.

Those of seemingly more usefulness will likely be bogged down in disputes and litigation for years, such as what has already happened with .XXX. Similar is likely to be expected with .SEX (likely will get drawn into a TM battle as well as be challened by the same foes of .XXX), as well, as many of the others for various reasons, which would result in a very long post for me to elaborate on.

In my view, some of the geographic / city TLDs listed have the best hope of being created (but not a sure thing due to potential conflicts); those seeking to catch domains in those, be aware that there could be strict restrictions in usage / ownership.

With all that said, as some others have written already, the addition of all these TLDs, assuming it ever happens, will likely make .COM domains more valuable much like what's happened with 800 toll-free numbers; when in doubt (there's 800, 888, 877, 866, 855 [not yet assigned], along with some other obscure regional toll-free prefixes), most people will try dialing 800 first, with some then trying 888. Similar can be expected with .COM - people try that one first / assume it's the site they're seeking.

In the longterm I belive there will appear more and more successful companies that did not start or have a .com site.

People will get used to the fact that there are other extentions and the value of .com will decrease.
But since most successful internet companies today allready have their .com it will take long before this will happen.

I´m thinking really long term 30-50 years.

They already have plenty of options actually:
  • companyname.biz
  • companyname.cc
  • youronlinecompanyname.com
  • wowthatdomainreallysucks.com
  • mycompany.crap
  • ...

What's coming around is no better than existing alternatives.

I think big businesses will fight against new tld's. They would have to buy them all up to protect their brands and for security reasons. It's a huge pain for them because they don't just pay a reg fee for each one, they also have to pay salaries for purchasing, accounting, lawyers, etc.
