.tv Premium Renewals - Your advice please

Over the next month I have several 'premium' names to renew. Most are straightforward, but I had put two in my 'renew' list and now I'm not too sure...

The first is ED.tv (which is $500 premium - very low for a two-letter) and I bought with the intention to create an education site, but have since become aware it would make and excellent domain hack eg park.ed.tv

The second name is EUR.tv (which is also $500 premium). I bought this as the European compliment to another name I own US.tv

Could people let me know, if they had the cash, would they renew these two names or let them drop?

I was always taught 'if in doubt - opt out' but I'd still rather take advice.

IMO premium renewals are not for speculation - hoping that an end user will come by someday to take the domain off your hands. $25 a year over several years won't break the bank but $500/year for several domains adds up fast - unless you are Rick Schwartz. Now you could still market the domain to a potential end user or contract someone to develop it but IMO you cannot be passive with a premium renewal domain. A minisite monetized with Adsense will never recoup the renewal fees.

If they were mine, and I had no immediate development plans, I would probably consider taking a shot and listing them on Bido using their no-reserve auction and clearly explaining the benefits of such low renewals. If you get no bids you still have the option to renew should you elect to keep the domains. IMO.

ed is worth it. you could sell that one now and make a small profit. you should seriously consider that
if you've let go of your development ambitions for it.

eur? really need to ask?

Thanks everyone for the advice - both here and by PM.

The consensus it seems is that ED is good and EUR not so - I will act on this advice.

I'm sat with over 2000 names (and even though its been tough I've actually got even more than I had this time last year) and aside from what is happening in the world, the market, or elsewhere, the reality is that I seriously need to concentrate on names that:

a) I can develop - really develop.
- and my past experience has shown me that it is a vastly longer process than most people think

b) I can sell for at least more than I purchased them for.

Most premiums DON'T fit into category B.

The .TV critics always harp on premium renewals and I will agree with them that premium renewal domains are very risky if you don't have deep pockets or development plans which go beyond the simple minisites which domainers usually put together. Domainers will often attempt to sell domains to end users for ten to even a hundred times their actual cost. If you pick up a good domain for reg fee or backorder it isn't that difficult to at least recoup your cost. Worst case your potential loss is limited. But if you hold a premium renewal domain for a few years recouping your cost becomes more difficult. It's like living in a home with a mortgage more than you can afford to pay. If you don't get rid of that mortgage, eventually that mortgage will cause financial difficulty.

I'd would just renew ed.tv,and also see if you can auction it off! Good luck!

I would have to agree that Ed.tv is a definite renewal

Ed.tv is a renewal. It has many things going for it.

Eur.tv - do you really need to ask? Let it go.

I am in a similar position. What do you guys think of the following:

Cartoons @ $3,000
Attorney @ $3,750

There were some very good points made above. These are probably 2 of the highest premiums I have to pay at the moment. Fortunately, I am in a position to do so but I wanted to get some opinions before I did. My gut instinct was to continue to register them and develop them at the earliest possible moment or sell to an end user.

I would highly recommend letting these drop and cutting your loses. These premiums are simply too high to justify a buy and hold approach.

premiums of $3000 to high on any dot tv....i think anyway.

Premium renewals are for development pros. IMO Attorney.tv could be developed into a lead generation website and could make some serious money. Unfortunately I believe our lead generation experts no longer participate in these discussions.

I think you have to put things into perspective when it comes to premiums. IMO attorney.tv is well worth the yearly premium to a top law firm with a well developed and publicised site.

Let's be honest, the premium would be less than 1.0% of their take handling one decent lawsuit.

Before I read your posts, I had the same thoughts. I renewed Attorney and let Cartoons expire though I am still considering renewing it before the absolute last deadline. Thank you for everyone's feedback.

I'm afraid to see what Cartoons.tv gets repriced at.

I think you made the right choice. Attorney has much more commercial appeal than Cartoons, although it does fit well in .TV

I'd let them drop. They are rather unexciting and unremarkable.

I would keep Ed.tv and drop EUR.tv
Ed is also a very popular first name!
